Robert Griffin III: If He’s a “Cornball”, Give Us More
Washington Post ^ | 12/19/2012 | Alfonzo Porter

If Robert Griffin III is a “cornball”, then clearly cornball is compatible with aptitude, proficiency, talent and intelligence. Frankly, I’d like every young black man in America to be defined that way.

While the recent commentary by ESPN reporter, Rob Parker regarding the young Washington Redskins phenomenon may have caught others off guard--I could see it coming from ten miles away.

As an educator, I have had the privilege to work with African Washington Redskins player Robert Griffin III. (Evan Vucci - AP) American male students in a number of capacities: as a teacher, principal, counselor, coach, and mentor. The level of raw potential that I have witnessed has been nothing less than astonishing. And what hurts so bad is so much of it goes to waste because so many young black men are trying hard not be labeled “cornballs” and are living down to the stereotype of what black men are supposed to be.

I have worked with students with natural academic proclivities in virtually every academic content area. I’ve seen the brilliant, yet undeveloped scientist; the astute, but unfocused mathematician; the prolific yet nonetheless intemperate writer. They all seemed tortured and tried to hide their natural, intrinsic interests in lieu of dumbing down, in order to “keep it real”. After all, being intelligent, respectful, funny, smart and well-spoken is still not a “black thing”.

Well Rob Parker, by the most gracious evaluation, is a dung ball.

That does not sound like well considered criticism.

I was only commenting on what I see in the content of this ESPN hateful commentator’s character. When I look at RG3, his character seems great. The ESPN comments were, er, “crappy”. Bet this black racist comes back, unlike Rush.

Well damn, I had no idea he was from Africa.

Reminds me of a young lady who I believe sued a college over her "race."

She was white, and a naturalized American citizen, but she had been born in South Africa. So on her admission application she chose "African American." She was admitted to the school but when she showed up, the school refused her admission and claimed she had committed "fraud."

I don't recall the results.

Different case, some years ago....student was told he would have to live in the “black” dorm...he had no problem with that. But there was no scholarship the following semester.

I hope the 30 days gives him time for some introspection. On the other hand I have never thought Rush was wrong or approached the topic improperly. The double standard is appalling. Look at all the hate aimed at Tebow for example.

The author cited several reasons for Griffin III being referred to as a “cornball”. He left out the most important one and the one that drives the black racists nuts: He and his family are Republicans.
