'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' rocker Dorman dead

SANTA ANA, Calif., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Lee Dorman, the bassist for "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" rockers Iron Butterfly, has died of apparent natural causes in California, a coroner said. He was 70.

Dorman, who had a history of heart problems, was found dead in his car Friday in Orange County, E! Online reported.

One of my first albums. I even saw them live at the old Philly Spectrum (one of the parents drove us). And who can not admit to working out that drum solo on a sofa arm or table?

I am thankful that his passing was peaceful.

Remember seeing them at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY back in the early seventies. Awesome show. It was their Metamorphosis Tour. The album had just been released and they were touring to promote it. Great album and of course they did all the old tunes. Guess what the last number was?

A couple of years ago I heard the lead singer being interviewed, and he mentioned that the actual original title of the song was "In the Garden of Eden", but that when his publisher called him to get the name of the song he was so stoned that slurred the title.

And the rest is history.

Back in my younger days the 17 minute version of Inna Gadda Davida was my favorite table dance song at the Great Alaska Bush Company in Anchorage... IF the dancer was one of the better ones, that is.

Ah, the Spectrum. I saw many shows there- The Who, The Dead, Dylan, Clapton with Muddy Waters, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, BOC, Rush, The Outlaws, Neil Young, and many others. We called it the Rectum.

My friend had the album and we used to listen to it under the influence of smoke back in the days of foolish youth.
The bass and drums on that song were very distinctive.

Don't forget the original bassist for Iron Butterfly, Philip Taylor Kramer - who after he left the band got a night degree in engineering and worked on the MX missile guidance systems, cutting-edge video compression technology, and - some claim - "faster-than-light communications" and a fascimile of the "Star Trek Transformer".

He disappeared when meeting an "investor" at LAX and his remains were found 4 years later near Malibu. Some think he was killed by a competitor or the Russians. The gov't called his death a "suicide".

Not a bad song but got more airplay than it would have due to it’s length. DJs said that they would use the song to go on bathroom breaks, especially if the radio station didn’t have one, get fast food, and do other things they didn’t want interrupted for a while ;)

I saw the Dead about 85 Times. I remember the “make Phil sing” signs. I was at Hampton Roads Coliseum in 85? when he finally sang Box of Rain live for the first time in years.

Saw the Stones and Live Aid at JFK, and a lot of great shows at the Tower- The Dead, Guess Who, Steppenwolf, Steven Stills, Spyrogyra, Jerry Garcia Band, and others. It was great growing up in the 70s!

That was the venue for the very last performance by The Grateful Dead before Jerry Garcia died, and that was the song, too. I’ve always loved “Box Of Rain.”. Beautiful, very affecting for me personally.
