A man from Ayrshire had to be hospitalised after eating too many Brussels sprouts last Christmas, it has emerged.
The traditional Christmas vegetable contain lots of vitamin K which promotes blood clotting.
However, this counteracted the effect of anticoagulants the man was taking because he had a mechanical heart.
Doctors at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank eventually realised too many sprouts were to blame.

Be careful mixing your green leafys and meds and you'll do just fine. I like 'em with lots of butter. Bon appetit!
I like em too.
I like brussel sprouts, turnip, and licorice — and my wife hates all three. I believe at least some of these things are preferred/not preferred based on a genetic marker of some sort.
Method of preparation has a lot to do with how palatable the item is.
When in doubt, add butter. It makes most everything better.
Buttered kale is still bletch as far as I am concerned.
Plenty of salt and pepper on that buttered kale—and you can hardly resist it.
OH, triple bletch.
Butter, olive oil, and garlic. Doesn’t get any better.
this guy has a mechanical heart which cost the state hundreds of thousands and now he deliberately does the one thing he was told not too....
he should pay his own bill....
If you must, I’d rather nutmeg, cream, and onions.
It ought to be possible in principle to monitor vitamin K levels and to titrate vitamin K antagonists to them.
Salt and a drizzle of apple cider vinegar for me. And if it accompanies a dish of navy beans with some cornbread, I’m a happy camper.
I am cautioned to not eat natural licorice because of the B.P. meds I take. Until I read that warning, I wasn’t even aware that there was an unnatural licorice.
That Aussie licorice is the real thing.
That’s a healthy indulgence!
I like vinegar on spinach.
try red pepper flake.
Red pepper flake on vinegar on kale. What else can we add, a little tobasco maybe?
IMO 1 Brussels sprout is too many.
I like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli. Sprouts? NO.
As far as Warfarin ,aka Coumidin, it’s a matter of being consistent.
I’m on Warfarin for a mechanical valve, love and eat lots of spinach.
But I’m consistent and the Warfarin dose is tailored to my eating habits.
Check my Pro-time monthly and it’s rarely out of range.
My dog loves Brussels sprouts.
chicken stock, onion, and navy beans or cow peas!
