After an overnight inspection of 2,800 panels in the Callahan Tunnel, 117 of them were removed—their support system had rusted through. …

On Friday, one of the panels weighing more than 100 pounds came crashing down in the left lane—but no one was hurt.

The tunnel is 60 years old. The panels were put in 20 years ago. Officials had done visual inspections in the past, but that didn’t reveal the extent of the corrosion issue. …

So they put them up and never inspected them in the last 20 years?

That’s about 5 % of the inspected panels....I am not an engineer but that sounds like a reasonable number.... My question why did it take a panel falling down to get a union backed government worker to pay attention? .... But I digress...

“Decaying infrastructure? Symptom of socialism. “

After all of the ‘stimulus’ money, the call for which was linked to infrastructure renewal, we have panels falling in tunnels.

i missed the big event but a couple of my buddies at work were looking into the possibility of renovating and expanding Farley Station in New York City.

They went down to the sub sub sub level to inspect then steel connection of the main support girders between the ground piers and the grid on which the station's fixtures are placed (tracks, switches, wires, etc.)

They discovered there wasn't a single girder that had not been cut through at the base by corrosion typical of that found where there's stray electricity!

They left immediately thereafter and did not return. However they REPORTED the problem ~ which had never been reported before. Their conclusion is that once the main platform was in place NO ONE ever went down there to check conditions.

That was, at that time, over 70 years of use. Did a quick read on the history of Grand Central Station, next door, that shares the same sub sub sub level that during WWII that area ~ immediately under the trains ~ was heavily guarded, so somebody went down there! They just didn't say anything about the corrosion.

So there you have it ~ management, government, power company, railroad companies ~ all of them not-working together! As you know the only purpose served by the massive business district in Manhattan is to read mail and take trips ~ and NO ONE cared about what was holding the main postal facility in the air, or what really supported the train platforms!

After well over a trillion dollars for "shovel ready" projects that didn't exist, we are only now, after the election, discovering the obvious work that should have been done. The difference is that using the money for productive repairs would not have allowed the corrupt Obama Administration to pay off their cronies.

That is very scary. Further, if God forbid a structural failure did occur, instead of taking responsibility for the failures of government they would point fingers at everyone else and use the tragedy to push for higher taxes - to pay for infrastructure.

Well, there were structural failures in that area ~ and since Grand Central was built by Vanderbilt ...... actually, every major financier in the area, including Donald Trump, has been involved in something or other.

“The great oak tree had stood on a hill over the Hudson, in a lonely spot of the Taggart estate. Eddie Willers, aged seven, liked to come and look at that tree. It had stood there for hundreds of years, and he thought it would always stand there. Its roots clutched the hill like a fist with fingers stuck into the soil, and he thought if a giant were to seize it by the top, he would not be able to uproot it, but would swing the hill and the whole of the earth with it, like a ball at the end of a string. He felt safe in the oak tree’s presence; it was a thing that nothing could change or threaten; it was his greatest symbol of strength.

One night, lightning struck the oak tree. Eddie saw it the next morning. It lay broken in half, and he looked into its trunk as into the mouth of a black tunnel. The trunk was only an empty shell; its heart had rotted away long ago; there was nothing inside — just a thin gray dust that was being dispersed by the whim of the faintest wind. The living power had gone, and the shape of it left had not been able to stand without it.”

—Ayn Rand, “Atlas Shrugged”

The so-called “shovel ready” projects were mostly “green energy” scams putting hundreds of billions into 0bummer’s corrupt/criminal pals’ pockets, which failed en masse. America’s infrastructure is crumbling fast and it’d take trillions to repair it. Cut flowers and throw pillows just won’t hide it anymore.

Our country needs to pull all the money we send out in huge amounts to other countries & get OUR house in order.

Those countries have well-funded lobbyists in DC paying Congress to do their bidding. The average U.S. shmuck who will get killed by a collapsing tunnel or bridge? Not so much. But rest assured, there will be tears and outrage (outrage!) when it happens again. And again. And again.
