Nearly 250,000 people have signed a White House petition that would label Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group after its members announced plans to picket a vigil for children killed in the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre.
The petition, which was created on December 14, had logged 247,170 signatures by Wednesday morning - making it the largest online White House petition in history.
Petitions need 25,000 signatures to be reviewed by the administration.
The Westboro Baptist Church has made national news in the past for its strong views against homosexuality. The religious group blames most tragedies - from the death of American soldiers to the recent massacre of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School - on what they call a 'pro-gay' agenda in the U.S.
The White House petition was formed after church spokesperson Shirey Phelps-Roper tweeted plans to protest a vigil for the Sandy Hook victims to 'sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgement.'

Westboro Baptist Church is a “hate group”, whatever that means, but it should not be the government’s business to identify such groups. I would throw the KKK, CPUSA, AFL/CIO, SEIU, Teamsters, and other democrat hate groups on the list too, but that ought to be a personal list, not one with an official government endorsement.
leftist pretenders whose only purpose is to defame Christians
I wonder how Algore feels about it?
Where were all these asshats when Westboro was showing up at fallen sodiers and Marines funerals?
they couldn’t care less...waste of time and bandwidth!!
Does it not encourage the radical Leftist’s in charge of this country when the people petition for more government involvement in our various State’s business?
It would seem to me we are being duped here into endorsing the system by responding positively to BIG Government.
That is just what I was thinking, we may not like the results sometimes but it is still protected speech. If we can stop others from expressing their opinion (no argument they are disgusting) because it offends us, who will defend us when someone decides they are offended by us?
Be careful what you petition for.
I say just keep the Aholes drowned out at funerals.
I think that if this group of 80 or 90 people, largely family members, had named themselves something like the John F. Kennedy progressives, that we would never have heard of them.
The media can choose to ignore groups or stories, for instance even one as large and national and as front pagey as Code Pink, was simply disappeared when Obama took over.
I am not worried about Westboro. The whole family is a bunch of bloodsucking lawyers so they can and will put up one hell of a battle. More than likely they will win too.
What is important here is how bad a name they give other Christians in the process.
Westboro hates and hurts white Americans. They are ghouls who show up at funerals to cheer the death of loved ones. They are too cowardly to harass a black soldier’s family at a funeral or the families of black children who have been murdered by insane thugs.
The left likes them. They add to the demoralization hate circus that is the Left’s social ideology.
Here’s a very interesting radio broadcast by Issues, Etc., an LCMS program, that analyzes the beliefs and misunderstanding of Biblically orthodox Christianity by WBC-
Dangerous ground to be treading on. Very dangerous.
A very liberal relative posted something on Facebook criticizing Fox News for referring to Phelps and his inbred clan as Liberals. She seems to believe they're Republicans. I can't be bothered to engage her in this. They really hate the truth.
They need to be ignored.......
With that being said, why ARE these kooks being given all this publicity and who is behind it?
I find it more than passingly strange that this Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) never seems to came to where the activist Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgendered (LGBT) crowd are protesting themselves. Why aren’t the WBC present when the Act-Up crowd goes after the target of the day? Do you suppose that there is a hidden agenda working there?
Ever since I learned one of their members ran for mayor of Topeka on the DEMOCRAT ticket.
Yes there is a hidden agenda.
As Christians they talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.
“As Christians they talk the talk but dont walk the walk.”
They don’t talk the talk or walk the walk. They have a message of their own creation that is foreign to true Christianity.
