Skip to comments.Study suggests lower death risk for the overweight

A century ago, Elsie Scheel was the perfect woman. So said a 1912 article in The New York Times about how Scheel, 24, was chosen by the "medical examiner of the 400 "coeds"' at Cornell University as a woman "whose very presence bespeaks perfect health."
Scheel, however, was hardly model-thin. At 5 feet 7 and 171 pounds, she would, by today's medical standards, be clearly overweight. (Her body mass index was 27; 25 to 29.9 is overweight.)
But a new report suggests that Scheel may have been onto something. The report on nearly 3 million people found that those whose BMI ranked them as overweight had less risk of dying than people of normal weight. And while obese people had a greater mortality risk overall, those at the lowest obesity level (BMI of 30 to 34.9) were not more likely to die than normal-weight people.
The report, although not the first to suggest this relationship between BMI and mortality, is the largest and most carefully done, analyzing nearly 100 studies.

Good medical care helps.
I'm always amused when I read this sort of thing. Ain't none of us gettin out of here alive, so I don't know WHAT they mean by 'less risk of dying'! ;o)
Micael Moore is breathing easy tonight after reading this.
There is a little overweight like what is described here then there is People of Wal Mart/Honey Boo Boo’s Mom overweight. Unfortunately the latter group will be the one latching on to this article more.
Yes we will.
Guess I can cross that news years resolution off the list. Heading to get another piece of that delicious pecan pie so I will live longer.
What’s a Honey Boo Boo?
Yeah. I wouldn’t have recommended it, but if your health is at stake what choice do you have? Pass the whipped cream, please.
There are lots of studies showing thin people are less healthy and die earlier than normal weighted people. The weight crisis is another manufactured crisis to control your life.
Happy New Year
