A 12-year-old north Florida boy shot a high-powered rifle and hit a 69,000-volt transmission line, causing almost 6,000 customers in Lynne, Silver Springs Shores, Silver Springs and Ocklawaha to lose service for several hours.
The Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/Vw7rxh) reports that the Clay Electric Co-op said the outage began at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and lasted for about five hours.

He did all that with a RedRider BB gun??!
Bad redneck! No! No!
Had some pinhead sight in his .30-06 on a transformer out here years ago with similar effect. Don’t they know that’s what squirrels are for?
First rule of shooting power lines is to leave the area rapidly and deny that you were ever near.
Good thing he didn’t shoot his eye out.
But seriously:
12 years old is old enough to know better. Stupid little jerk.
Well, that means all 12 year old boys will have to be confiscated and banned forthwith.
I would blame it on squirrels.
As a boy, I once tossed a wire coat hanger up onto some power lines. The resulting blinding purple flash and rain of molten metal so charmed my companions that we spent the rest on the evening trying to reproduce the results with about fifty hangers. We never got another light show. It’s amazing how much dangerous fun we had in those bad old unsupervised days.
Nobody wants those low powered rifles.
Prolly because you tripped the breaker with the first one.
Sounds like y’all had some fun!
Squirrels are for taking out transformers, at least from what I’ve seen.
Shooting at tree limbs? with a rifle? where is this dumba$$ kids father to administer a severe enough beating so he remember to NEVER shoot a weapon with a mile range up into the air
Just a few short weeks ago this would not have even made the news.
But as usual the media is continuing to bring up every single issue that has a firearm involved. No matter how insignificant.
We actually thought if that but the street lights stayed on and the nearby houses were still lit up so we figured the power was still on
“watch this...here hold my Red Bull”....*smiles*
Thats what the county provides all those signs for...keep things like this from happening.
Reminds me of a WILLIE AND JOE cartoon by Bill Mauldin in WWII.
The boys are shooting at insulators on a transmission line.
Willie fires a shot and Joe says...”Dammit willie, it wasn’t your turn!”
By the time I saw him, he appeared to be purple and there was another boy at the base of the tree looking up at him. My mom was driving and didn't see anything of this. I told her "mom, that boy in the tree is purple." She said it was not nice to lie.
Later she went to the store and explained to me what I saw and said sorry. It's easy to understand, and I tell her to this day I would not believe me either.
So sorry for the kid.
I've never been comfortable around electricity since then. That image is sealed in my mind forever.
Clay Electric Co-op will be changing their name to
Clay Pigeon Electric Co-op.
There is a lesson here all wannabe revolutionaries could learn when they come for the guns.
Sounds horrifying
That’s what I meant, somehow I wrote like a MSM reporter and was vague. ;)
I couldn't throw one more than about 8 and a half feet unloaded.
I’m sure some bearded savages took notice and will be talking about this real soon.
My reading comprehension has been known to be vague on FR posts as well.
