Woman mistakenly rescues a bobcat
MSN ^ | Unknown | VetStreet

Posted on 01/03/2013 1:18:16 PM PST by Altariel

Thinking that she accidentally hit a large cat just after midnight Wednesday with her van, a woman in Veazie, Maine, put the unconscious animal in her vehicle to get it help.

But after driving for several miles, she realized that this was no ordinary house cat: it was a wild bobcat.

Danny Boy took the theme from one of the great original viral links/audio from the earlier days of the Internet - the deer, the dog, and the bambulance. That audio was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the headline - we’re on the same page!

I found this guy the other day on my back porch. I tried feeding him and it turns out that he is not very friendly because i think he may be scared. Not quite sure the breed but I am assuming he is part Siamese. I have him in a crate because he is not really house broken. If he is yours please reply.

Old timer I shared an office with a number of years ago told me about the time in the 50s when he and some buddys trapped a bobcat and then stuffed it in a big suitcase.

They then went down the ‘disadvanted’ section of town (Green Hills in Arlington, VA), set the suitcase on the sidewalk, and then hid on an overlooking bluff behind some bushes.

Sure enough big car rolls down the road....backs up, couple of guys inside, dude gets out hands in his pockets, looks around, grabs the suitcase and throws it in the back seat. Car speeds off down the road.

Well, car speeds down the road about 30 yards that is before before doors fly open, 6 people jump/roll out and take off running.

Car was still rolling down the road with no one in it and pops the curb across the small intersection and hits a building.

TRUE story.

Just how do you pick up a bobcat and put it in your van thinking it is house cat ?

At least she was thoughtful enough not to leave it hurt

Many years ago there was what I thought was a small abandoned ferret in our yard. With the help of my daughter we trapped it in a Hav-a-hart. We made a cage for it and placed it in the kitchen. The "ferret" investigated our kitchen and seemed to like it here. Oh, what a nice pet it would be. UNTIL, that night/ early morning when it was screaming and gnawing like a wild animal. It turned out to be a small stoat in its winter coat.

After I posted it on FR I met our very own FR member, Stoat.

We let Ernie the ermine go. For a few years we would see him by our wood pile. Trust me. I never made that mistake again.

The female bobcat isn’t much bigger than a good sized house cat. A mature male is another story.

A radio lady here in Tampa found a dog swimming in Tampa Bay about a mile off shore. She took it on board and then home.

She took it to a vet to have it checked out. They told her it was a rat.

Yes, she’s blonde.

I had a friend in high school that thought he was a taxidermist. He came over to the house once very excited about the perfect condition bobcat he found on the road. I should have let him mount that really big house cat.

Virginia Wildlife just had a story on bobcats ... females are about 28 lbs. I had a long-haired mixed breed calico that was 24 lbs! There is a domestic breed, the ‘pixiebob’, that looks very much like a bobcat.

I had a friend in High School that bought an old hearse fairly cheap at an auto auction. He would often slow down and start to pull over when he saw “disadvantaged” walking along the road. They always dove into the ditch and would rebound back up running.

I had been hearing some blood curdling screaming at night last spring. Several weeks later I found a dead bobcat by my mailbox. It had been hit by a car. I was impressed by how big the thing was.

We let Ernie the ermine go.

I can understand how that happened. We had a construction project on our house and the workers were adamant about a wild "ferret" that kept coming down to share food from their lunches. They were serious about it. A couple of months later the "ferret" came right in the garage and sat down while I was working. LOL. It reminded me of a ferret, but I knew better.

It was a stoat and I also saw him later with his winter coat. They are uncommon this far south in western PA.

Back in 2003, my cat suddenly died. It was 100% unexpected since he was only a year old and full of life. I was heart broken, cried for a month - cried worse than Boehner.

One day I was driving and spotted the most beautiful kitten by the road. Oh! a blessing from God! I parked the car and tried to catch this kitten. It ran alongside the road and darted into bushes when I got too near. I was amazed how quietly and quickly it was able to dart in and out of bushes while trying to get away from me. It was too cunning for being a kitten, it had “street smarts”. I finally gave up.

Later that night I realized I had been chasing a young bobcat. I laughed at myself. That snapped me out of being depressed about my lost cat. I did enjoy the adventure and God does protect the stupid. LOL

The female bobcat isn’t much bigger than a good sized house cat. A mature male is another story.

Bobcats can and do successfully mate with house cats and produce offspring that look like big house cats. They tend to carry the tufted ears though. House cats are genetically very close to their wild cousins.

I tell people, even with regular housecats.

IF
your cat was twice as big as it is now
AND
you were only half as tall as you are now...

You would not be the “owner”
You would be the “lunch”!

[She quickly pulled over and got out, and the bobcat jumped out and went under the van, seeking protection, authorities said.

Sadly, the cat had to be put down because the strike from the car was fatal.]

This doesn’t make a ton of sense.
