Young quarterbacks have been the dominant storyline of the 2013 season.
Of the 12 NFL playoff teams, six start quarterbacks that are either in their first or second year. The days of needing an established veteran at the quarterback position may be over.
Of those five young starting quarterbacks, three are African-American. Rookies Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson will play each other in the premier wildcard game this weekend, with the Washington Redskins hosting the Seattle Seahawks Sunday afternoon. Colin Kaepernick gets a week off, as he helped lead his San Francisco 49ers to a bye.
And while our common notions of the how much experience is needed for a quarterback to to lead a team to the Super Bowl may be changing, the notions that many have for the black quarterback may finally begin to change too. RGIII, Wilson and Kaepernick have shown just how far black quarterbacks have come.

Have these people ever heard of Doug Williams?
I won’t rest till there are black curling champs, so help me Obama.
What is so unique about being black?
It isn’t Black QBs — it is that no “running QB” has ever been in, much less won, a SB. And most Black QBs take off quickly.
Doug Williams was a pocket passer IIRC.
“Black quarterbacks changing perceptions as NFL playoffs near”
Huh? What perceptions? The ones that the left ASSUMES everybody has?
Isn’t it nice how every story has a racial angle now?
‘After the break, we will take a look at the KKKnitters ring
that was recently knotted by authorities’
So when will a see a story about a player changing the perception of the white running back?
Yup, all us old white farts from the Founders to today are useless...
PS Peyton Manning...
BTW didn’t some racist sports announcer rip RG3 (who is an exception human being based on comments from people I know who know him) for being an Uncle Tom? Yup, it is all about race. Except for the actual producers.
Painful topic for conservatives. Rush’s idiotic comment about McNabb (don’t defend it) coupled with his idiotic decision to appear on that stupid shout fest led to his demise. Next came the addiction story (which explained a little), his suspension, and his return as a timid Bush-bot.
We are a tribal nation now. No question about it. Identification is based on skin tone, hair color and nostril size.
Tell me again who was the last black, “dual-threat” QB to win the SuperBowl?.....just sayin’......
When the NFL “allows” Toby Gerhart, Peyton Hillis, Danny Woodhead and Brian Leonard the carries they deserve......and look out for Rex Burkhead next year....
Did this story’s author check with ESPN’s Rob Parker to find out if Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick are real or cornball before writing this story? This story is already flawed as we know from Parker that RGIII is a cornball, therefore should not really qualify as a black quarterback.
Not that it matters to idiot liberals like this story’s author, but Colin Kaepernick was adopted as a baby and is of mixed racial heritage, in other words - halfrican. From Wilson’s appearance he also appears to be of mixed heritage.
Limbaugh was right about the press’s interest in seeing black quarterbacks do well. Can’t we just recognize that these teams are billion dollar franchises and they have a vested interest in playing their best players and cut the nonsense with this liberal social analysis?
Joe Kapp was in superbowl IV. He sure wasn’t a passing quarterback...
He is the only quarterback to have played in the Superbowl, the Rose Bowl, and the Grey Cup.
or Warren Moon...
Yeah, a slow pocket passer. Pretty much will win the superbowl 39 out of 40 times. I prefer those odds.
I won’t be satisfied till we have a transgender kicker and a homosexual woman as quarterback
Is that old widbag still on the air?
>>Joe Kapp was in superbowl IV. He sure wasnt a passing quarterback...<<
Perhaps I should have said “In the modern era.” I mean, look at Blanda — they don’t even have a NAME for what he did on the field.
Can’t wait to see how Manziel does in the pros. Probably like Tebow, not allowed to play his game.
Ask Jimmy the Greek.
the existence of this articke proves that Rush was right. There is a section of the media which does root for the success of the black QB. It may be justafiable, but the author of this article is likely in that cheering section and that predeliction may skew one’s perception of performance.
It’s the era of Obama: everything HAS to be historic. So the media pumps up any BS they can.
Good one !
Doug Williams, Warren Moon? HELLO!
I really do not care if Russell Williams is black, half black, half white, whatever.....
All I care is that watching Seattle Seahawks games is fun again.
You obviously have sucked down some serious shit from someone who lied to you. Or, you're just an ignorant little twerp.
Colin K nor Wilson appear to be all black. Colin looks middle eastern. Doesn’t matter but if you write an article on it try to get it right.
That was what i was thinking. Why are we, well this guy, even talking about this? WTF does the race of the QB have to do with anything? We - most of the rest of the thinking world - are way, way past finding the race of the QB in any way remarkable.
I hear ya ! Jeez people, act like you've seen this before. COME ON, MAN !
You need to get your HTML $hit together.
Just to name a few...
Yes, these three young dual-threat, black quarterbacks have done well. But the problem with QBs that run so often is that they don’t hold up too well in the NFL. Donovan McNabb was once a frequent runner until he sustained season-ending injuries in three or four consecutive seasons.
RG3 was injured while running and missed a game a few weeks back. The question is still whether the running QB can last even a few seasons in the NFL before serious injuries diminish or end their ability to play the game.
And even with these three, all the coaches and knowledgeable observers want them to minimize the hits taken and to slide to avoid taking hits. I don’t think QBs who run frequently will have long careers in the NFL.
“The days of needing an established veteran at the quarterback position may be over.”
That’s going a bit too far. Most college quarterbacks aren’t cut out for the NFL. Many great college quarterbacks have no future whatsoever in the NFL. It never had to do with race, but the difference in the pro game and college.
” The days of needing an established veteran at the quarterback position may be over.”
Will they retract the article if the Super Bowl is Aaron Rodger vs Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?
Joe Kapp was in superbowl IV. He sure wasnt a passing quarterback...
He lost that Superbowl too. Warren Moon never played in a Superbowl, but won 4 or 5 Grey Cups. He is a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback and also black. He could scramble, but was more of a pocket passer in the NFL
Sadly, for NC State fans, he was released from his scholarship with a year of eligibility left due to his desire to explore a baseball career with the Rockies. When that did not work out as well as he would have liked, he accepted a scholarship at the University of Wisconsin where he led them to the Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl victory. I think Tom O'Brien's decision to release him from his scholarship was part of the reason that he was fired following the 2012 season. He is a strong Christian and a frequent volunteer in the Seattle community. All of this is to let the Freepers know that, whatever his skin color, Russell Wilson is a truly special player and Seatle is indeed fortunate to have him!
“Is that old widbag still on the air?”
Yep, and what is being discussed on this thread is what he pointed out ten or more years ago about the media and black quarterbacks.
*cough* TEBOW *cough*
“Cant wait to see how Manziel does in the pros. Probably like Tebow, not allowed to play his game.”
“His” game or Tebows’ doesn’t translate well to the big boys game. If you want to be a running back in the NFL, you are better off to be a running back (Paul Hornung)
..and Steve McNair was MVP not some dummy.
If Michael Vick is any indication, the answer is still no. Well, missing a couple of season due to incarceration doesn't help, either.
Also, don’t forget, no disrespect to RGIII and Wilson but they do have some great run games behind them and good D. It’s not like they’re carrying the entire load.
From 1987 until now, the Philadelphia Eagles have started a black quarterback 328 times.
I feel the same about RG III and the Skins. It will be a good game.
Rush was right......tonight before the GB/Minnesota game Tony Dungy and some other black talking head surmised that the Vikings had a better chance to win with second stringer Joe Webb filling in for that injured pale face Christian Ponder who had taken them to the playoffs.......result?.....Webb with a sub 30 QB rating and 10 points against the same team Ponder put up 37 against last week .......LMAO
