The war is over, but intrigue, crisis, romance, and change still grip the beloved estate in the thrilling new season of Downton Abbey. Written and created by Julian Fellowes, with its all-star returning cast and Oscar-winning guest star Shirley MacLaine, Downton Abbey, Season 3 premieres January 6, 2013 on Masterpiece classic!
Post comments and predictions, please.
Are they introducing the zombies this season?
Well, if they dont bring back Lady Sybil I will be sorely disappointed. Killing her off was a headscratcher. Maybe it was a dream...
I’m a big fan of the series but am disappointed with the addition of Shirley MacLean to the cast. I hope she doesn’t end up chewing up the scenery.
Please. This and Hell On Wheels is my only refuge fr zombie nonsense.
Maggie Smith is wonderful !!
Such a classic, skilled actress playing it with just the right amount of humour.
I fear that it wasn’t. Jessica Brown-Findlay is gorgeous.
May be the "jumping the shark" moment. We'll see.
Shirley isnt just annoying she brings down acting level for the entire cast. She overacts.
For your attention, my dear :-*
She is about my favorite in the series. What a great character.
She wanted off the show to go on to other things, I read.
She was a cutie, but I didn’t like her husky voice. Someone that young should not have a voice like that.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Agree.
The series is successful enough without bringing on board a bunch of Hollywood has-beens.

Maggie Smith is excellent in her role. She has some of the best lines and her facial expressions just enhance them.
Shirley who?
I wish Netflix would get Season 2!!!
The attitudes of the characters are too contemporary — servants treated with consideration, sitting around the dining table gabbing instead of scrubbing floors or managing the fireplace 17 hours a day, jetting off to the village for errands, marrying for love and not social position etc. The original Upstairs Downstairs was soooo much more realistic.
We already watched ALL of season 3 online...

My wife has been bouncing off the walls all day because she is so excited.
I promised I would give the show a try at least. Looks pretty decent.
What the hell? Thanks, creep! I had no idea anyone on here would actually give away any of the plot for season 3. Hope you’re happy.
I didn’t give away the plot to season three which no one, including me, has seen yet because this is the debut episode. You haven’t been watching the series or you would know she died last season. POS.
And yeah, pretty happy, and laughing at you, thanks!
I started watching Season 2 on PBS, but I got in a bit late. IIRC, the PBS website had the Season 2 episodes.
[I started watching the series Season 1 via Netflix due to posted comments.]
We just watched the first episode of season 1 a couple of nights ago. I love great writing and this show’s got it.
Yes to Jessica-Brown Findlay. Even Michelle Dockery is classy.
Why they brought in the looney New Age Shirley McLaine is a mystery
When did that happen? She was killed off? Guess I missed it.
When? We just finished watching season 2 last night, all 9 hours of it, and don’t recall her dying!
Would you mind telling me which episode that was in? We just watched the last episode of season 2 last week on PBS and she was very much alive. In fact, the family had just discovered that she was pregnant.
I read somewhere that Matthew gets killed off in a car accident... I sure HOPE not! At least not, until Mary get pregnant.
Without giving too much away, the Google search makes it seem like her demise is during Season 3 — which had already aired in the UK.
I guess you missed the spoiler from GB, where season starting here ended Christmas Eve or something. I don’t mind knowing. I love anything in old costumes, 1800-1900s.
I know some of the spoilers. If you follow the news at all, it’s hard to avoid them.
I thought Sybil married and moved away, going to have a baby.
That is how Season 2 ended, yes.
Sybil did not die name caller! The girl Matthew was going to marry did. Sybil married and moved away. She is with child.
As far as I know, Sybil is still alive, married to Branson and pregnant. I don’t know where that person got the idea that she was dead. They might have her mixed up with Matthew’s fiance Lavinia Swire, who died of the flu in Season 2.
I don’t Shirley Maclaine.
Maggie Smith is pure gold.

I’m not fond of Shirley either. I wish she had stayed out of this excellent series.
Check out The Chronicles of Downton Abbey:A New Era on Amazon. You can read sections of it there. I was so fascinated I ordered a copy; exquisite photos. Amazing that everything is absolutely perfect, elegant and classy. Also learned that the episodes are not written that far ahead so none of the actors know what’s coming!
Maggie Smith is a jewel—she always has the perfect comback—her nuances are priceless. It’s unfortunate they had to drag Shrilly McLaine thru the landscape. As my father so often quoted “What you are speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying”. The difference is that here the actors have become the characters while ours often just remain themselves and overshadow any role. Betty Davis (who???) was always Betty Davis and Meryl Streep is always herself. Which is why I don’t waste my time seeing her movies—I’ve seen her already.
If you're an Amazon "Prime" member, Season 2 is available free on Amazon's Instant Streaming.
Agree.
Great actors and actresses become the character and make the audience believe they are the character.
Too may of the modern ‘actors’ and ‘actresses’ are, as you say, portraying themselves, with roles written for them. They are actually personalities, not ‘actors’ and ‘actresses.’
thank you.
So... Matthew won’t take the money that will save them... but, I bet he DIES before he can get rid of it... and, MARY will keep it!
