We have five barn cats. Often, they will leave us a little “giftie” next to their food dish...I assume they wish to give us evidence that they are earning their keep.

They are all feral rescues. I think they sense that we have given them a home and a second chance. You’ll not find a finer worker on the farm.

I need tissues. I have a liquid coming out of my eyes.
What a wonderful cat.

Thank you for the article. And the kitteh ping.

(Going to give my kitty a very big hug and some tuna treat for being a cat)

I remember when my kids were small that we brought into our garage an old piano that had been stored in a barn. One day my five year old daughter awakened to a dead mouse lain next to her head on the pillow. Our cat was an excellent mouser and obviously loved my daughter.

Back in the 1980s, I had a cat who was quite the hunter, although she was a rather small cat. One day, I came home to feathers all over the living room. Then, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, and came face to face with a terrified pigeon.

I swear that pigeon was bigger than she was. Anyway, I examined it and, finding no obvious injuries, took it outside to release it. The poor bird just flew off without any signs of difficulty.

Concur! We have a girl cat who, when the house quiets down, will minister to us in terms of figuring out where we hurt and then licking that area. Her misfortune was that she imprinted a really crazy pointer-setter dog at an early age, so her behavior is rather bizarre to other cats. Her intent is good and she has a home with us as long as we last. (This is the year we get to figure out who will take care of our fuzzballs.)

All animals KNOW when something is wrong. They may not be able to tell us in ways we understand, but that can be because we give them less credit than they deserve.

They are trying to help us in the ways they know how. Like humans, however, animals are not all of the same intelligence and not always of the same education. But rest assured: They try to help us. It is up to us to try to understand what they are saying.

"My cat often brings me little “gifts,” many of which are still alive!"

Had a stump-tailed Siamese who used to catch/kill shrews and line them up in a row in front of the fridge.

Every Italiano I know are the meanest, dark sense of humored, non-apologetic sons of b@tches I’ve ever met. Sentimental? Nope! I love them for it ;D!
