ESPN McCarron apology: Katherine Webb commentary was over the line
zap2it ^

Posted on 01/08/2013 6:37:41 PM PST by SMGFan

ESPN has issued an apology following Monday night's BCS National Championship game where the world was introduced to Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron's girlfriend, 2012 Miss Alabama USA Katherine Webb.

The problem comes from ESPN host Brent Musburger who spent a fair amount of time talking about Webb, rather than the game. (Video embedded below.)

According to E! Online, ESPN has apologized for the excessive commentary stating, "We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that."

Webb didn't seem too phased by Musberger, insisting she didn't think it was creepy at all. The televised attention led to a huge jump in Twitter followers for her, as well as a chance for Donald Trump to try to cash in on her instant fame, if only for a minute, when he tweeted: "We are going to ask Katherine Webb to be a judge at the Miss USA Pageant coming up in Las Vegas."

There sure is a lot of apologizing going on in the sportscasting business lately.

Well he didn’t say “look at that little monkey run” that cost another sportscaster his job. Or did it?

The problem comes from ESPN host Brent Musburger who spent a fair amount of time talking about Webb, rather than the game.

Announcers are instructed to talk about what is on the screen. I can guarantee that 10 seconds before they went to the shot of Webb, Musberger was told in his ear that it was coming so he could discuss what was going to be on the screen. Just sayin'.

espn has so many problems, Brent Musberger’s performance last night doesn’t even crack the top 100 in my mind.

ESPN is dumber than hell. At least Musburger wasn’t gushing over the QB himself. ESPN would have been fine with that. At least Musburger still finds women attractive. That probably offended ESPN more than anything.

Kind of a creepy response from ESPN.

Figures. Musberger wanted to do anything he could to distract the viewers from ND's pathetic failure on the field. ESPN of course, being a network by and for 15 year old wannabees, couldn't really care less.

So disgustingly PC that a sportscaster can't comment on a hot babe who happens to be Miss Alabama and is playing hide the salam’ with the Tide's QB. What's this world coming to?

I had no problem with all the attention on Webb. In fact, given the actual football game, I would have been thrilled had they just put a camera on her!

I don’t think it’s the attention to Webb that’s the problem, I think it’s the attention from a man 50 years her senior - over and over and over - that’s the problem.

Simple fix:
Keep your eye on the game/match and not the honey in the stands. They don’t play the game nor impact the outcome.

I’d rather watch Pete Sampras serve (back in the old days) than to see who the current icey blonde he was dating at the time.

I did not watch the game. I had to go watch the video to see what all the fuss was about. I saw nothing offensive or inappropriate. I agree ESPN must just be a bunch of fags. Jeez. And, yeah, she is a pretty gal.

No, not ESPN (although I’m sure a couple of their female casters are), but their parent company - Disney/ABC - has a substantial number of homos in its upper management.

Was Musberger's commentary over the line?

Shouldn't Webb be the one to make that call?

If she didn't mind then what business is it of anyone else to be offended?

During the game, my BFF posted a story about this and commented on how creepy Musberger sounded. Several of her friends made similar comments on her post. Lets just say that they are southern belle sorority ladies, so if they didn’t like it, then it is not surprising that women all over the country didn’t like it either.

My son said the most frequent comment he heard about the game was, “AJ McCarron’s girlfriend is HOT!” We live in southern Arizona.

An apology is absurd.

You were watching for Musberger to have an orgasm? Yuck. Perhaps you should have kept that bit of information to yourself.

"I believe that was the end of Howard Cosell's career on Monday night football."

Nope. Howard continued to host Monday Night Football for years after the "little monkey" comment. It didn't effect his career at all, it just resulted in a few outraged commentators and articles.

Cosell continued to host for years after calling Mike Adamie a 'little monkey' in 1972 and Herb Mul-Key a 'little monkey' in 1973.

However, when he called Alvin Garrett a 'little monkey' on Monday Night Football in 1983, the SCLC and others attacked him for racism. Cosell resigned at the end of the 1983 season.
