I guess the question that needs to be asked, what’s the higher of them?
I know in places like NY, if you eliminated the gas tax, you’d be saving those folks tons of money as a good portion of their fuel costs are taxes.
I can't say for sure, but I suspect the new taxes will increase revenue more than the gas tax repeal will reduce it. For example, if a typical two earner, two car family uses 1000 gallon of gas a year the gas tax would be $170. If they spent $40,000 subject to the higher sales tax (probably low estimate)the .8 tax would generate $320, plus whatever the higher registration fees would gather.
