I Once Saved a Drowning Squirrel From a Horse Tank With a Hoe...Vanity
1/11/2013 | JouleZ

Posted on 01/11/2013 8:58:37 PM PST by JouleZ

I went out to my garden by the barn and heard splashing in the horse tank. I saw movement and ran to see what the heck was going on when an exhausted squirrel rose up and tried desperately to claw her way out of the metal tank. She couldn't and was swimming in circles.

I grabbed a hoe and after a few failed attempts, got her out. I was afraid to touch her with my hands because of fleas and potential disease. She finally used her teeth to bite the edge of the hoe and I was able to lift her out to safety.

She just laid on the ground, exhausted. Too weak to move but breathing. I was going to leave her there but then my horse came over and tried to stomp her with his hoof. Haflingers do that kind of thing.

Finally, I got her moved out of the horse pen and she laid on the ground for hours before she could move. Finally, off she went. The End.

Well not really. I think she's the same one who comes into the garage to eat dry dog food and crawls up the side of the house and peeks in the window sometimes. The real End.

I thought there were only hoes in inner cities.

This was a garden variety hoe.

What was a horse tank doing with a hoe?

Are horse tanks what the heavy calvary use?

Bless you for saving one of God's creatures. I know that a squirrel is not way up there, but if one is in jeopardy and you save it, God smiles down on you.

I like your story very much also. Good job. I’m always amazed watching the athletic ability of squirrels. You probably saw one in one of the only situations he couldn’t get himself out of.

No, the heavy calvary uses large wooden crosses.

I once saved a little field mouse from a bin full of horse feed. He was pinging his head on the lid, trying to get out. I scooped him up in a feed bucket and set him loose.

Our barn cat, George, ate him. The end.

And George gnawed his wee head right off. Then he put him in his mouth, with a leg sticking out each side, and the tail out the front, and *crunch*crunched* him. Then he slurped up the tail like a spaghetti noodle.

True story. But no hoe involved. Except me.

I once killed a squirrel for persistantly taking flying leaps into my hanging bird feeder. I shot it to death with my pellet gun, it was not an easy death for the squirrel, it took about a minute and three hits for it to die. It scolded me the whole time too.

I felt bad for it after. It was just being a squirrel after all. I then put some seeds on the ground and in the feeder so the squirrels could gorge on the ground. Their laziness and access to food prevented further flying leaps.

We are able to live peacefully now.

I suppose that the squirrel was trying to get a drink. I had never seen one drink water before last week and caught sight of one of the neighborhood critters drinking from the pool. Since my dog likes the salty water, I guess the squirrels are attracted too.

I once saved a little snake that had become entangled in a bunch of masking tape I had thrown on the ground (from painting). Had to perform “surgery”, cutting all the tape away from him (her?).

Saw him sometime later sunning himself. I knew it was hime because he still had a little piece of masking tape left on his skin.

The end.

I think the squirrel had been drinking from the horse tank in the past and we usually kept it pretty full so for whatever reason, the heat maybe, the water level was low and when she fell in it was too low for her to get out. Thank goodness I went out that day and heard her splashing around.
