I had no idea that there was an different ending for this movie! And as there are many FReepers who are fans of this movie I though you would enjoy it as much as I did!

I thought they decided to go out in a suicide pact with the plane.

"I'm Hub McCann. I fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives that no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men, and loved only one woman... with a passion a flea like you could never begin to understand!! That's who I am."

Nothing like a little fishing in the morning to relax a man.

I like the original ending better. Shorter and made the point.( “the real things worth believing in.”)
That was a great “little” movie.

That was great. Alhtough I like the one they chose, it’s nice to have options. One of my favorites..and Robert Duvall IS my favorite. He’s great in this movie...but as Gus McCrae, he is tops.

That character reminds me of a long passed friend/lover...right down to the mannerisms, hand gestures and the way he shakes his head. I couldn’t believe it when I first saw it....sigh.

I don’t know. That’s a little drawn out. I hate to say it, I don’t like either ending. What bugs me the most is the kid grew up to be Berkley Breathed... I mean, a cartoonist, but exhibited no such talent in the beginning. It just seems tacked on. If he had been a writer of adventure stories-—now that would have made sense.

It was a comic strip called Walter & Jasmine. Something that Walter had created about himself and his lion, Jasmine.

I would say a stable environment would bring out talents in such a boy.

But he should have exhibited SOME artistic talent or cartooning ability (as a kid) in the beginning to make this work for me. I’ve watched the movie again and I still saw no evidence of that. Wouldn’t the wild adventures the old guys told him made for pulp novels? That would make sense.

I guess I would re-edit the ending. I would combine the funeral with the helicopter arrival and the grandson of the Sheik.

I don’t see where such an ability could have easily be built in to the movie.

My family and I love this movie. It was recommended by a co-worker when we were discussing the lack of quality movies for preteen and young teen boys. She also suggested the movie “The Librarian” with Noah Wyle and we enjoyed that too.

Now that I’ve viewed the new ending, I would like to think both events happened. :)

MANHUNTER also had an alternate ending. I saw it years ago on Showtime and still have the tape of it somewhere.

The missing scene is after the bad guy gets killed the detective tracks down the NEXT family on the list to be killed. As he is at the door the husband comes running through the house with a .45 in hand and places himself between the detective and the wife.

The detective explains he wanted to make sure they were OK and then leaves. Cut to the scene at the pier.

Several movies have alternate endings.

That was on of the funniest endings I've ever seen in a movie. The way the plane was in the barn, they were doing a “Victory Roll”!
