Doctors and Guns (Vanity)
(none) | Jan 16, 2012 | Bobl

Posted on 01/16/2013 8:51:44 PM PST by BobL

Given President Obama's list of 23 Exective Orders, the one that seems to have the quickest and most direct effect on the public is #16, which will likely result in a defacto regulation that doctors will ask about guns at home...and they won't just ask you, they will ask your children (as happened to me a number of years ago), every time. The reason that it is a defacto requirement is that no doctor wants to be the one that didn't ask, the next time a Newtown-type shooter goes nuts.

So how to respond? I'll give a few possible answers, and my take on them:

1) For Heavens sake no, guns only result in violence and more suffering.

2) Nope, I just don't like having them around. I prefer to call the police.

3) None of your damn business. I might, I might not.

4) Yes, but only for defense and I keep it locked up except when under my control.

5) Yes, and I can put a round between your eyes from 50 yards.

And the winner is... #2 - regardless of whether you actually own any. #1 looks too contrived (in my opinion).

Obviously #5 gets you an immediate escort to the slammer, but #3 gets you put on the kook side - which means not only a gun owner, but one of those dangerous types that loves freedom - and believe me, that will be a category (for the database) by the time this is done. #4 still puts you on the wrong side of the issue, as far as the government is concerned. To them, a safe and responsible gun owner is still a dangerous person.

So what about your kids when they're asked? My first recommendation is to not even let them know you have guns until you've trained them well enough to lie convincingly. Others may not agree, and that's fine, but the (government's) plan will be to use the kids to extract information that the parents would not otherwise divulge. Once the kid(s) reach the capability of lying, all they have to say is there are no guns in the home, and that's it. Should you teach your kids to lie? My answer has always been yes - when it is in the interest of protecting your family from government. No different than if they're asked whether they're spanked. A no answer ends the discussion...a yes answer leads to more questions and possibly a case file being opened.

That's it from me - now it's your turn.

Yes, it was going that direction anyway. I once had an eye doctor ask me if I was having trouble driving. I said “no way, I’m fine” I wasn’t fine (could still drive, but not fine), but I figured he would have to pull my driver license if I said yes. And don’t even get me started about what happens when you bring an injured kid into any contact with the medical community...unless you have a lot of witnesses to prove that you were not the cause of the injury.

It looks like the feds have the wording they need. Sure, you don’t HAVE to answer the question, but if you don’t, then you just did answer - as far as they’re concerned. You would have just said: “Yes, I have guns, and yes, I have an attitude”. That’s what they’re looking for.

Now, if it had been written to prevent doctors from asking any questions on the subject, then we would have been covered. Looks like the NRA fell for that ruse.

Yea, because once you say yes, it sets up a fishing expedition, where they start asking more questions (what types, how are they stored, etc.), maybe send you mail on gun safety, maybe even have someone contact you. I’m not sure if that will happen, but it could.

Most Doctors think it is their medical duty to stop people from eating to much, drinking to much, using tobacco, driving to fast, getting depressed, and in this case shooting each other....

I learned a long time ago not to tell them anything more than what ails me..I'd recommend others do the same and teach their kids to keep their mouth shut.

“I learned a long time ago not to tell them anything more than what ails me..I’d recommend others do the same and teach their kids to keep their mouth shut.”

True. Where I work they’ll give you a questionaire on mental health, and it would have questions like the following:

In the morning, when it’s time to wake up, do you:
a) Jump out of bed, all excited to take on the day
b) Usually get up without a problem, but once in a while feel like sleeping in.
c) Never want to get out of bed, until I absolutely must.
d) Wish you’d never been born.

Of the above, any answer except (a) will result in a diagnosis of Depression. Next an army of useless, but well-paid, people will descend on you DEMANDING that you get treatment immediately. In the future, don’t be surprised if that diagnosis puts you in the no-gun category.

...and for Heaven’s sake, never take your kid to a shrink, for the same reason. Just spank him instead if he acts up (regardless of what Dr. Spock’s books tell you).

I had this conversation with daughter of Doomonyou (18 years old) today and was somewhat disturbed that she had this question posed to her a few years ago and answered "yes." It was a written list of questions you typically fill out on your first visit to a new provider and she answered something like, " yes, we have guns in the house and I know how to shoot them and they are for protecting our house." The Nurse replied something like, "Wow, we don't get many answers like that! My Husband is a hunter and we have guns in the house too." Wife of Doomonyou has been asked and answered NO, I've haven't been asked yet. All of us have been asked, "Do you feel safe at Home?"

Anyway, If you have a CCW, bought a hunting license, bought a gun in the last ten years or so, your on a "list".

My pediatrician asked me. I told them I wouldn’t answer with the following explanation. I don’t know who has access to their records. If I answered yes it could prompt someone to try and rob the house to steal my guns. If I answered no it could prompt someone to try and rob the house because they knew I didn’t have guns.

He agreed and recorded no answer. The little one is too young to be able to anser.

Maybe it’s high time we the peopel begin diagnosing our doctors with ‘mentally unstable’ diagnosis’ so that they lsoe their right to practice since they have refused to honor their patient confidentiality oath- or we coudl at least order the docs to undergo psychiatric evaluations with psychaitrists of OUR choosing to determien if they are mentally fit enough to be allowed to continue practicing

“Damn” is just a word. Society decided it was a bad word. I don’t care about what society thinks and that goes for every word. I would not, however, include “God” in any sentence except for praise as His name is holy. Society’s words are not holy.
