Trying to Find a Good HTML Web Hosting Site

I am trying to find a good web hosting site where I can start a very basic, very simple, website using HTML. I'll probably upgrade to a better programming language later, but for I'm not much of a programming geek. HTML is about all I can muster the neurons to learn.

It can be a free site, it can be a paid site. I just want something I can dump my HTML files to and not have difficulty doing so.

I agree with you. I’m writing a php site that is extremely modular, since the arrangement of various elements on the page is dynamic, changing depending on what the user is doing on the page, with some of the elements appearing on many different pages. It’s much easier for me to copy and paste sections of the code when I delineate them with nested tables, than if I had done it with just one huge table. Sure, I still have problems where I forget a /table tag and have my page layout go screwy, but that is very easy to notice and fix.

I tried them all. I have been using 3rd St. Webhosting for years for my own websites and my web design clients. It has the most intuitive Control Panel of any hosting service I have ever used; it's very easy to get around in. They don't over-sell their shared server plans so the sites run great, and their support is also very promtpt and helpful.

Using your favorite search engine, just enter “top web hosting companies”. Compare and see which ones meet your requirements. Prices vary and most will allow growth.

I have a year's subscription to PHPWebhosting but the only reason I got it was to share files back and forth with my kids. I never read into the name (doh!) and when I tried to run HTML on it, of course, it didn't work. I have to use PHP.

So, I tried a search engine search of top web hosting sites and couldn't really find anything I was comfortable with. That's why I posted here on FR for my need to find one.

All I want to be able to do is develop something similar to FR but with different features, articles and eventually a method to post replies.

That’s what I’ve been doing for the past several days. Everything is on my PC and I would like to just be able to upload them to a web hosting site, tweak them, and make them work. It doesn’t seem to be that easy anymore.

All I want to be able to do is develop something similar to FR but with different features, articles and eventually a method to post replies. It will have content that is much different and probably more from a Christian/Judeo ethic standpoint than from just a conservative standpoint, but I'm developing that as well.

One thing I plan on doing is having a section called "Who Said What?" which will list, and source, what people in the government say so when people say something like "Oh, Obama couldn't have said that" all you have to do is look it up, point to the article, and say, "Umm, wanna bet?"

Yup, that is what I do. Apache for html and Tomcat for servlets, works great. Of course I could let tomcat handle the html too, but Apache is quicker with static content.

FR is dynamic content, I wrote something very similar years ago and I still have the source code. It was all written in Java using servlets. If you have good programming skills contact me and we can work something out.

I have a bunch of software that I have written for my self and for my business (a little bar). I have a Point of Sale system, a Jukebox system (uses IR to control a 300 CD player) a document management system (with checkin and checkout) plus a cheap rip off of FR (lol, close your tags) I am thinking of putting all of it into the public domain. The document management system is only 85% complete but it is very cool.

So far everything I've seen or tried with the "free" sites will not give me the ability to just upload my files. They all want to help me design a webpage and I can't figure a way to get past that. It's very frustrating. All I want is a place to upload my work.

I kind of miss my old Freeweb webpage now..........

I pay about $8 per month for dreamhost which gives me unlimited domains, unlimited users, and now unlimited space (I have been there for a while). If you want, I can set you up with a shell account (you provide a domain name). Just freepmail.

YUP. Big bump for Dreamhost. Been there six or eight years now... Two hundred bucks every two years and unlimited everything, just as you said. Excellent.

Content people have a hard time updating pages in design view of Dreamweaver if there are multiple nested tables. Good design has the desired look AND easy of editing.

I need a new company myself. The co I use no longer supports frontpage and so now I can’t do anything to my website! Unless there is another way? Someone can tell me. Thanks

“how to span columns and rows within a table”

Can you provide a link showing what you mean? I would appreciate if so. I’m not really sure. A “how to do it” would also be a nice link, again, if/when you have time...

Sounds like you need CMS, not what I posted.

“So run it on Linux. Really, it’s not that difficult.”

That’s a good point! Ubuntu is pretty good for newcomers.

I’m posting from Linux Mint and have loved using Linux for the past seven years.

Good idea.

I have Apache running on Xubuntu with port 80 open,
so friends and family can visit (and laugh at my work.)

If they do somehow manage to get in and mangle things up, I can boot another disk
and try again.

Folks may do this with Windows, but I think I will pass on that.

If you want something cheap (and works easily for a newbie) try http://cawebsolutions.com/. Their plans start at $35 per year. I’ve used them for a number of years and never had any downtime or problems.

I’ve grown my page through the first 2 plans and I’ve stuck with them because they are easy to use.
