Protecting Your Dog Do you include your dog in your home-defense plan? by Sheriff Jim Wilson

January 08, 2013

From time to time we see reports of police shooting a dog in the course of responding to a call for assistance or while executing a warrant for search or arrest. Without a doubt, some of these incidents may be the result of poor training or the lack of proper planning on the part of law enforcement. However, that is of little comfort to the citizen when his family pet has been destroyed. With some thought, planning, and training, this kind of tragedy can often be avoided.

Having a family dog should be viewed as a commitment on the part of the dog owner. Besides proper feeding and regular vet care, the dog also needs basic obedience training. The animal should be taught to come on command, as well as to sit and to stay. Your dog should understand that “No” means that he is to stop what he is doing and pay attention to you. In short, you should be able to control your dog whether it is loose, or on a leash. This sort of training is surprisingly effective and inexpensive. The local pet store or your vet can direct you to trainers who can educate both you and your dog.

Allowing a dog to run loose in the neighborhood is not only a way to make enemies of all of your neighbors, it is also virtually a guarantee that the dog will come to the attention of the authorities. If the animal is not in a fenced enclosure, it should be on a leash and under your control. Training and controlling your pet will go a long way towards keeping it safe, not to mention how much your neighbors will appreciate you.

Sadly, the police can’t look at a dog and determine that it is harmless anymore than they can tell the good guys from the bad guys simply by looking at them. However, dealing with family pets ought to be part of every policeman’s training. And every tactical unit should develop plans for neutralizing a dog without harming it, if at all possible. Pet owners in a community might even consider opening a dialog with local law enforcement to address these issues and help develop this training.

We talk about the importance of having a plan for protecting your family. The family dog is a valuable part of most families and deserves protection as well. The solution is planning and training. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Someone should breed a strain of tiny yet very savage teacup poodles who attack en masse, thereby overwhelming their much larger victim....Velocipoodles.

;D

Teach your local cops how to obey a few commands like “stop” and “behave.” These young putz-heads who are being scooped up by our police forces lack life experience, manners, morals and respect for life and others. No amount of training dogs is going to keep today’s cops from shooting animals when they have the chance. It’s who they are.

Cops don’t generally shoot teacup poodles;...

Teacup poodles they stomp.

What kind of sub-human shoots a miniature dachshund? A pathetic person with no self-esteem. Well, he showed them who’s boss.

My dog is well trained, obedient, knows not to leave his yard no matter what, and is generally speaking protective of several members of the family, mostly my youngest son who the dog claims as "his."

He is however, a Labradoodle. A black Labradoodle. If someone were to break in the house while none of us were home, I have zero doubt he'd show the burglars where all the good stuff is.

Generally speaking, a loveable dog. But sometimes, not too bright.

Understandable. But, what self respecting burgler wishes to know where the kibble is, and the cat's litter tray, and the bathroom trashcan?

Hopefully we can get a conservative politician to propose a bill.

If it’s a felony to shoot their dogs, make it a felony for them to shoot our dogs.

I hope Halla enjoyed her social time. How is Odhinn tolerating the ‘baby’?

Time to start arming the dogs.....

"My Alpha has informed me you do not have a warrant. Moreover, my Alpha has not indicated that you are his guests. Furthermore, you do not have treats for me. Depart now (leave any undetected treats on the ground before you leave.)"

Sadly, there are still some folks who buy that argument too.

Much like ourselves, our dogs are expendable nobodies.

It’ll never happen.

A dog can be taught to behave when anyone comes to the door. It does not have to be the police.

If someone wants their dog to protect them, the best way is to train them when someone comes to the door. The worst plan is to have to lock the dog up when someone comes to the door. A locked up dog is no protection.

I agree with this article. I am not defending cops; I am protecting my dogs. It’s like defensive driving. You know there are lousy drivers on the road so you drive accordingly.

Cops seem to be really afraid of dogs these days and fire at will. I am not about to give them any opportunity of taking out my dogs.

None of the dog owners here disagree with the notion of responsible dog ownership.

However, even those who have responsibly cared for their dogs (had dogs on their own property, in their own homes, closed up in a bedroom/bathroom or other side room have lost their dogs to Sudden Puppycide Syndrome.

For the sheriff to blame the owners of the shot dogs for being the victims of a crime is again for him to blame the rape victim for the assault committed against him or her.

It is not the victim who needs to take care, it is the assailants, and all who would cover for or defend them. Notice that the Sheriff did not return to condemn the actions pointed out to him by commenters to his blog after his rebuttal in the comments was resoundingly contradicted.
