In a fortuitous Shot Show meeting in the Press Room, I had an excellent conversation with Robert Farago, publisher of “The Truth About Guns”, he proposed an interesting idea from an East Coast perspective:
“If a storm rolls through my area and things get bad enough that looters are a serious risk, my neighbors not only do not have the skills to protect our neighborhood – they don’t have the tools.”
Storing food specifically for neighbors who do not prepare is something we already advise and teach – the idea of storing firearms that your neighbors can use to help defend your neighborhood is a new perspective for me (of course, in my neighborhood, everyone has an envious arsenal).
So, what parameters need to be considered with this idea? Consider that these neighbors likely know nothing about firearms, potentially have never shot or even held a firearm and certainly may have no training at all. How can you incorporate all that into a plan to be able to relatively safely hand out firearms to your neighbors to man a line to keep looters out?
Robert’s suggestions include a revolver so they don’t have to figure out how to load magazines or anything complicated and a heavy trigger pull so they don’t accidentally discharge their weapon. For longer range work he proposes a lever-action .22 with a tube feeder. This will allow them to utilize the firearms easily with minimal instruction and basically turn it into a point and shoot experience.
Many of you will share his perspective of having such inexperienced neighbors, fortunately I don’t have any experience with that viewpoint to really expand on the situation other than stories I’ve heard/read...

Of course that was back when they were $90 a copy. Now I see there are even shortages of Mosins and they are selling for much more.
(Heck, I stopped by the local Gander Mountain today and they didn't even have any .22 ammo. None. Nada. Zilch. Absolutely nothing.)
Actually, that is part of my plan, so to speak. I have a few 22’s and such. I figured inexperienced people could use them to assist and they pose less a risk in being turned on me.
I can’t even imagine a neighbor who not only hasn’t prepared but has no protection for their family. My obligation is to inform them to prepare and defend themselves. Thinking I need to store food for them and supply a weapon for them is liberalism and not what I’m about. I’ll help those who tried to help themselves and band together but keep the socialistic attitude out of my preps and planning.
I have a number of guns that I have picked up potentially for this purpose. Some police trade in beater Smith Model 10’s, and a few elderly 16 gauge pumpguns. (Why 16? When the first “ammo panic” hit, I bought up every 16 gauge buckshot and slug round in town, some had been on the shelves so long that they were priced $1.99 a box. Also, if these folks get overrun, the relative weirdness of the ammo is a real bottleneck to the guns being turned against others)
We bought enough Mosin’s for us, three. Got ‘em when they were $100 bucks a copy for the hex receiver model and a tin of 450 rounds was $89. You can set up the family pretty good for around $500 and three trained shooteers firing Mosin-Nagant rifles is nothing to be trifled with.
Whoa there. Who said anything about not sharing? Did you read my post? If you had you would have seen that I share with those “who attempt to help themselves”. The article speaks of people who have done nothing. If you want to join the big O with his “share the wealth” concepts go right ahead. I’m not there.
Then you go into the reason you see as not being able to prep. Did you try? Are you trying? Here’s a quote from my post. “I’ll help those who tried to help themselves”. Let that sink in for a minute then re-read your post and see if I insinuated you were “equated with a welfare queen”.
Now on the other hand if you are not trying and aren’t trying let the chips fall.
BTW I had polio when I was 2 years old and now have what they call post polio syndrome which makes it nearly impossible to walk. I still have never taken any welfare, assistance, or government help of any kind. I have always owned my own business and retired at the age of 60 in ’99 and am now living on two acres that I grow and produce all of our vegetables, meat, milk, and eggs. I’m building a methane digester to run a generator that we can produce all of our own electric. I do it all without being able to use my legs or be on my feet. Understand that I am unlikely to listen long to rivers of tears.
Not too sure about sharing with neighbors who lack foresight or firearms skills.Anyway, all of our neighbors are armed.
Sorry to hear that. I’m a disabled veteran with severe heart disese, diabetes, edema, p.a.d., apnea, hypertension, etc., etc. If I could work I wouldn’t have these issues.
You can do more than you think. Use your imagination and if you need any suggestion holler. I’ve been there and done that.

I already sold all my guns for $10 apiece, to a newly arrived Mexican who said he wanted them for protection...
No background check, and I didn’t ask for any ID ‘cause I figured if he was OK for the US government to let into the country, that was good enough for me...
Really? My guns fell out of my canoe on some lake in Minnesota. I forget which one. Why was I out there with every gun I own? Well, I wanted to spend an entire camping trip cleaning old guns of course. Sank right to the bottom. Somewhere.
i’am not arming neighbors who know nothing about guns, much less’who don’t know me. i don’t want bullets coming back at me from my own weapons.
they had different priorities than i did, they chose what to spend money and time on. some have similar priorities.
Sadly, some of the new laws being proposed would make such a transfer a felony, and there is no David Gregory provision.

My wife had a stroke a few years back. If something happens, we’re homeless in less than a month.

A number of years ago after a home invasion by trashmen which severely injured an elderly couple in my dad’s comfortable neighborhood, my father and two other older men went door to door to offer home defense classes to the neighbors. Many men and women took it up.
My father and his friends helped the neighbors purchase guns, taught them how to use them at the range, placed emergency signals in place at all the houses and I remember my father saying proudly: No one is unprotected in this neighborhood for blocks around.
There’s only a couple of neighbors I would feel comfortable handing a gun to, and they already have their own.
On the other hand, there are lots of neighbors who I would trust with a chainsaw. And I daresay most looters would run if confronted by angry residents armed with chainsaws.
(Especially if we dribbled some fake blood on the chainsaws first!)
