The time bomb in Obamacare?
Washington Post ^ | 1/18/2012 | George Will

Posted on 01/19/2013 5:31:15 PM PST by Kolath

A willow, not an oak. So said conservatives of Chief Justice John Roberts when he rescued the Affordable Care Act (ACA) — a.k.a. Obamacare — from being found unconstitutional.

But the manner in which he did this may have made the ACA unworkable, thereby putting it on a path to ultimate extinction.

George Will misses the point that Obamacare was never intended to work. It is not about health care; it is about power and control and to force the country to demand single payer government health care. Obamacare will live long enough to severely degrade the US health care system and destroy private insurance companies. When people cannot get or pay for health care, they will demand that the government save them. That is the plan.

Actually, it's the leftwingtards who imagine people will beg the federal government for more of the same when Obamakkkare fails.

Conservatives recognize that our federal system saves us from having only that option. Even as we speak states are taking actions to protect themselves from the worst of it ~ and when the dam breaks, and Obamakkkare destroys the federal judiciary (an unanticipated blessing), the people will take care of their own medical needs.

Think about it this way ~ the system has crashed and you no longer have a designated health care insurer ~ and your kid is lying there with a broken leg from a bicycle wreck, and your first act is to call your Congressman?

That's just crazytalk ~ you are going to take care of your kid first ~ somehow ~ somewhere ~ and then your Congressman might get a call, or ................. something far more unpleasant.

The left is not prepared for reality. Whatever it is they think they've got planned, or that you imagine they've planned, that's not going to play out that way.

IMO, the death knell for the ACA was not the SCOTUS decision that the mandate is a tax, but the requirement that pre-existing conditions must be covered.

If you’re reasonably healthy, it’s much much cheaper to pay for routine care out of pocket rather than pay hundreds a month for insurance. If you develop a serious illness, then purchase the insurance.

It’s like buying collision insurance after you have an accident.

It won’t be long before a majority will be clamoring for single payer.

ObamaCare Constitutionally doomed?

Dream on, Conservatives.

Obama has TWO political trump cards.

First, Amnesty will give Democrats millions of new voters and permanent control of Congress and the White House.

Second, if for some reason it does go to the Supreme Court, the LeftSide judges will do what they always do - ignore the Constitution.

Please grow up. Obama inadvertently let corporate America take over the US. Most of Obamacare was written by large Healthcare Corporations and Insurance Corporations. Obama and the Dems handed Main Street over to Wall Street. Obamacare is a corporate wet dream, write laws mandating the public to buy your product no matter what the cost is???!!!! Good luck trying to undo the law. Dems will want to save face by fighting its appeal and corporate lobbyists will work on the GOP to water down the appeal or they will sponsor a Senator to filler bust it. Americans need to learn one thing. It is not easy to create a law but it is equally hard to repeal a law because we have a Senate. The SCOTUS was the last chance to instantly repeal Obamacare and SC Roberts dropped the ball. Corporate America (most likely) then Dem radicals offered him a deal he could not refuse.

Good news, if so.

More like wishful thinking, I'd say. What has been created by statute can be changed by statute.

RE :”So, Lambert says, the ACA’s penalties are too low to prod the healthy to purchase insurance, even given ACA’s subsidies for purchasers. The ACA’s authors probably understood this perverse incentive and assumed that once Congress passed the ACA with penalties low enough to be politically palatable, Congress could increase them.
But Roberts’s decision limits Congress’s latitude by holding that the small size of the penalty is part of the reason it is, for constitutional purposes, a tax. It is not a “financial punishment” because it is not so steep that it effectively prohibits the choice of paying it. And, Roberts noted, “by statute, it can never be more.”As Lambert says, the penalty for refusing to purchase insurance counts as a tax only if it remains so small as to be largely ineffective.
Unable to increase penalties substantially, Congress, in the context of “guaranteed issue” and “community rating,” has only one way to induce healthy people to purchase insurance. This is by the hugely expensive process of increasing premium subsidies enough to make negligible the difference between the cost of insurance to purchasers and the penalty for not purchasing. Republicans will ferociously resist exacerbating the nation’s financial crisis in order to rescue the ACA. “

I have made this point 100s of times here the past few years.
The ‘personal fine’ is a joke. It will just drive health insurance premiums through the roof.
In fact this is why House libs are now calling for the ‘public plan’ again.

"Please grow up."

I beg your pardon, when you stop your own little wet dream, you might wonder why insurance companies would would knowingly participate in their own suicide, why hospitals and medical practices are laying off staff, why it is already becoming more and more difficult to get medical appointments, why para practitioners are taking over functions previously handled by doctors, etc. You will see government health care within a decade and companies that are part of it have joined the crony capitalism/fascist model.

Exactly. And if they succeed in toppling insurance companies, well, that will start a 2008-style chain reaction of insurance company failures, and, gosh golly, they’ll have to “bail them out” so the whole financial system doesn’t collapse.

No clamoring from the voters required, it’ll happen by itself, due to the extreme emergency, and Republicans will raise a token hissy fit but do nothing to stop it. Then, once the insurance companies have been nationalized like GM, they will operate at a loss as the gubmint’s new healthcare handout bureaucracies. Nominally private companies but really government agencies.

And then the hospitals will start to go seriously broke, and they’ll need bailing out...

O'care's money bomb is bad enough---but the control it will exert over every aspect of American life will be even more devastating b/c EVERYTHING Americans do affects their health.

==============================================================================

REFERENCE--EXCERPT----Dmocratic Socialists of America, is despite its deceptive name is the U.S.'s largest and probably most influential Marxist based organization. Many of its several thousand members operate through the Democratic Party, New York's influential Working Families Party and the organization also counts thousands of of labor unionists, religious activists, journalists and college professors in its ranks. D.S.A. helped establish and continues to support the more than 80 strong Congressional Progressive Caucus and is particularly close to "single payer" healthcare champions Rep. John Conyers of Michigan and Caucus founder Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

DSA's Quentin Young, Barack Obama, 2003

Dr. Quentin Young of Chicago is the father of the "single payer" healthcare lobby in the U.S. he is also a former Young Communist League member, a long time D.S.A. activist and a one time personal physician and long time friend and mentor to Barack Obama. Obama, himself has a more than 25 year history of involvement with D.S.A. members. D.S.A. means to use its considerable power and influence to push for completely socialized health care in the U.S. in the next few years.

Writing in the latest issue of Democratic Left, D.S.A. National Director Frank Llewellyn outlines some of the tactics the organization will employ to bring all U.S. healthcare under direct and complete state control. The first step is to move public opinion in the "correct" direction.

In DSA we never expected more than the passage of an imperfect bill that we could work in coalitions to improve... DSA has been fighting for a singlepayer, Medicare-for-all approach to national health care for more than two decades. We expect to continue to fight for that approach in a number of states, especially in California, as the state legislature has passed single payer legislation in the past, only to have it overturned by a gubernatorial veto.

DSAers in every state and city should be prepared to rebut distortions with letters to the editor and op-eds that talk about what socialism really is – and what true social democratic public provision would look like, particularly when health care is the paradigmatic public good that markets, let alone for profit oligopolies, simply cannot justly and affordably supply. Next step is to punish or remove those remaining Democratic legislators still opposed to socialized healthcare.
