Comparing two inaugural speeches, Reagan's and Obama's

A comparison between Ronald Reagan's and Barack Obama's first inauguration speeches reveals the gap between their understanding of the role of government and how much America has declined from January 1981 and January 2009.

Reagan said, "We are a nation that has a government – not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the Earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows no signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed."

How prescient Reagan was in 1981 when he said, "It is no coincidence that our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government."

In Obama's first term, his signature legislation called Obamacare not only imposed many new taxes, but challenged freedom of religion as well. It effectively nationalized twenty percent of the nation's economy. It put government in between patients and their physicians.

The challenges in 1981 were not that unlike those in 2009. History records that Reagan met those challenges, lifted our spirits, and did his best to reduce the size of government. It also records that Obama has exacerbated our problems and done his best to increase the size of government and its intrusion into our lives.

Obama's legacy thus far has been a polarized society based on class warfare; a society in which millions more Americans are purchasing guns in anticipation of an attack on the Second Amendment, and a government that menaces the Constitution.

I think I was somewhat offended by the straighten up and fly right tone of the speech. He’s accountable to no one now. He’ll do what he wants.

He’s accountable to the one to whom he swore his inaugural oath. That is who we must petition.

Amen. I was sad that he did not use his own Bible.

Communist Tyrant Hussein Obama began his second illegal regime yesterday.

Tyrant Obama seeks revenge, and has the Democrats pledged to support his continued destruction of the United States of America.

Olog-hai stated: "He is responsible to the one to whom he swore the oath. . . ."

Excellent observation, and one which coincides with the true intent and significance of the requirement of an Oath.

In the Year 1876, a Black Minister, historian, and Ohio State Legislator was invited to speak on the occasion of a celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In that "Centennial Thanksgiving Sermon" delivered by the Rev. Benjamin W. Arnett at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Urbana, Ohio, Arnett traced the histories of nations and the ideas history underlying our Declaration and Constitution, documenting his remarks about America's Christian foundations with quotations from Founders, Presidents, and Supreme Court Justices, as well as the Constitutions of the States.

Of the Oath of Office, he said:

"Oaths and affirmations are appeals to God, by him who makes them, that what he has said, or what he shall say, is the truth. It is the most solemn form under which one can assert or pronounce anything, and its violation is a crime of the darkest hue; one which God has declared he will punish; one that is made infamous and punishable by fine and imprisonment, by the laws of the land. Thus Christian obligation is required of every officer of the general Government, who fills any position of trust, honor or emolument. Many reports are required in the form and shape of affidavits."

Every lover of liberty should read all of this remarkable Sermon whose theme is "Righteousness Exalteth a Nation, but Sin is a Reproach to Any Nation." Here is a link through which, by clicking on Arnett's name, anyone may access and read a full text version.

Please don’t make me compare these two side to side. That would be like abuse. I think I’ll end up in tears.

The biggest difference between Reagan and Obama as far as their Inaugurations is the fact that Reagan was serious and truthful when he took his oath very much like our first president, George Washington.

Obama has taken his many oaths with no intention of honoring what he is swearing.

Presidential oath-taking is extremely serious, because God takes it seriously.

The oath is asking God to witness the proceeding.

It is a matter of blessings and curses.

When Obama said "So help me God" he forced God's ear to listen to his lie.

Obama has intentionally cursed himself.

God cannot be a witness to a lie.

God certainly will be a witness against such a lie, and especially out of a leader on the earth. The curses that follow such false oaths are quite terrible.

In George Washington's Farewell Address he talks about his personal fear of maybe offending God by any omission committed during his tenure as president. It reflected his deep understanding of blessings and curses.

He left our country blessed.

Any comparison of Obama with Reagan is a farce. If anyone wants to compare Obama’s Inaugural Screed to something, then they should harken back to the days of Uganda’s Idi Amin Da Da, Emporer-for-Life for a more appropriate look.

I was amused by the questioning tone when CJ Roberts prompted Obama with the words “so help you God (??)”.

Here’s a text that Obama should have sworn himself in by ...

I, the One, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the political class enemies of the revolution while in the Office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and deliver what is left of this country to my friend Vladimir Putin, and by the way, so help me, I am God.”

We are a nation that has a government – not the other way around.

The way elections are ran I’m not sure about that any more.
