Astronomy Picture of the Day -- The Cygnus Wall of Star Formation
NASA ^ | January 22, 2013 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 01/22/2013 9:02:41 PM PST by SunkenCiv

Explanation: The North America nebula on the sky can do what the North America continent on Earth cannot -- form stars. Specifically, in analogy to the Earth-confined continent, the bright part that appears as Central America and Mexico is actually a hot bed of gas, dust, and newly formed stars known as the Cygnus Wall. The above image shows the star forming wall lit and eroded by bright young stars, and partly hidden by the dark dust they have created. The part of the North America nebula (NGC 7000) shown spans about 15 light years and lies about 1,500 light years away toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus).

My favorite was “Pebble in the Sky” — although I can’t help but wonder what it would have been like had Asimov not changed it in midstream from “Pablo in the Sky”, a science fiction novel about a time-traveling cello player.

How much fact is involved with the idea that new stars are created? What is the proof?

There isn’t any. Nor is there proof that they “die”.

LOL!

You’re not supposed to ask questions like that; its disrespectful of your betters.

The proof is hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen make everything happen. It’s said matter can’t created or destroyed just as God had no beginning and will have no end.If God were an element he’d be hydrogen. When an old star dies it releases every element in it, carbon, helium, calcium ,every element on the Periodic Table. The energy from the star disturbs a cloud of dust and hydrogen and as it begins to co-lase from it’s own gravity until that dense cloud of matter forms a nuclear core and when it reaches critical mass and temperature, and then BAM! another star is born and on and on it goes like life it’s self. The eternal beginning and ending.

I thought Einstein had proven that hydrogen is the second most common element in the universe.

After stupidity.

It was not a barb against anyone. The mention of hydrogen made me think of a quotation from Einstein about hydrogen and stupidity...I don’t recall exactly how it goes but it was something along the lines of “hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, after studipity.” Or maybe he had hydrogen first and stupidity second.

That looks like a California wild fire seen from an airplane. Your thumbnail even shows plenty of smoke rising off the fire and blowing toward the left.

Great job, Mr. Civilizations! ;-)
