An employee at a Southwest D.C. Safeway has been fired after a Saturday incident in which a cashier used a homosexual slur, a Safeway spokesman said Thursday.
The cashier, who worked at the Safeway at 1100 4th Street SW, used a slur when referring to a gay couple in the store, Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle said Thursday. The couple has filed a complaint with the D.C. Office of Human Rights, reported Metro Weekly.
On Thursday, Muckle said Safeways human resources department had conducted an investigation, which resulted in the cashiers termination.
We are truly sorry this happened in our store and are taking decisive and urgent action to ensure it does not happen again to any customer in any of the communities we serve, said Safeway Eastern Division President Steven Neibergall in a statement. No one should face what these customers faced, and we are humbly sorry it happened to them in our store.

What ever happen to going to the manager? Now, there's a special Human Rights Office? Doesn't anyone see a problem with this?
No easier firing decision than this.
Rule number one in customer facing jobs: it’s OK to hate the customers but they must NEVER find out.
Doesn’t matter what the name you called them was or why or even if they deserved it, they heard, you’re out.
Yeah, you could play all of Judy Garland's LPs ten times over during that time. Yesterday's bathhouse steam. Still it's good to be up-to-date on the rules of the game. It appears that the gay card now trumps the Amish card.
I hope that Walter (the couple’s feline) has gotten over the insult by now.
Same here. Back in high school and once I turned 18, these clowns tried to strong arm me in joining the grocery workers union. I think that’s how I eventually turned conservative when I asked them why they’re taking money away from me when I need every cent I can get.
The union lackey looked at me like I was an alien. I try to avoid Safeway as much as I can nowadays.
What happened to “Sticks and Stones”?
You long for the Crusades? You must have a different defintion of the Crusades. In any case, your comment here seems somewhere between ill-informed and ignorant unless it was a joke.
One thing about comments is that you will NEVER hear of a black employee being fired for calling customers "whitey" or "rich white M****er F****rs", becaue they don't have jobs, or, they are in the welfare line and that's the language used routinely.
In TODAY'S WORLD of political correctness (sic), you can call a White person any name you want, and it's "Freedom of Speech", but if you use accurate descriptive terms to describe a black or Hispanic person, you are terminated, arrested, or charged with a "Hate Crime"......that's a FACT, Jack......think about it.
Well, to be fair, the two were over in produce getting ready to toss some salad.
What would you have done?
Is posting this story an attempt at baiting to fit the new agenda of “Gay Rights” as announced by Obama?
Well, it actually takes *that long* for posts to go through all the IP filters from the Loony Bin!
I’d love to hire her. Spine is hard to find.
Yep. D’Angela is no more.
Not the correct behavior on her part. God will take care of them and they’ll wish they were back in Safeway with some chick insulting them.
I guess they’re not proud of their sexual choice.
“It’ch the lishp that gave you away, Broosh,” one of the fags was heard shaying to the other ash they left the shtore.
When younger I also worked in grocery stores. We had a lot of fun with the intercom system. For example, when pretty women were in the store and eventually made it to the frozen food aisle, a “code x in frozen food” would be announced...
