How should I sell an old pick-up?

I have a pair of old 50's era Dodge pick-ups that have been sitting in the woods since the 1960's. Is it worth my while to try to sell them to someone who restores old vehicles, or just sell them to the junk yard? I believe one is a 1952 Dodge step-side pick-up, that is largely intact. The engine, transmission and front-end are out of it, but they're present. It's got a dent in the roof where a tree limb fell on it. All the straight windows are broken, but the two curved windows just behind the doors are still intact. The other is mostly complete, but the cab is disconnected from the chassis. It's got the front assembly, but no fenders. It does have the hood. I can get $250/ton for scrap steel at the junkyard. Do you think it's worth my while to try to sell them to a collector, or should I haul them off? Any feedback would be appreciated. Directions to a reputable Dodge/Chrysler website where folks might be interested would be great as well. So, what do you think?

Definitely look for a restorer. My Dad had a 1927 Ford Model A Pickup that he found on some property he owned in Pa. It was a heap. Still, he found a restorer who wanted to restore a vehicle from his birth year. Both men left the transaction happy. I knew the buyer quite well - he was my employer at the time. Never heard anything negative out of him on the deal.

PLEASE don’t scrap them. There are people out there that will gladly part with more than their scrap value. Even if they are really rough, they are useable.

From time to time I run into old vehicles and either part them out or sell them whole on ebay, you would be surprised at how much some of them are worth. you might find that parting might be the way to go. I have sold parts as far away as Ireland and Australia. the curved rear glass might be worth some money.
good luck

you might craigslist or ebay them, if you’re really curious to see if someone might want to use them to rebuild a vintage truck. try craigslist first, it’s free.

I am slightly interested. A friend of mine loves to fix up old trucks and can pick them up, if you are local. Not sure the locations of the trucks but let me know, might be able to work something out.

You could put an add on Craigslist you might find someone that will buy them for parts or a hot rod.

I would love to get one them running again and drive it to work everyday.

Just post the details and maybe a picture or two on one of the collector truck forums. Just a good hood from a 50’s vintage truck is worth more than $250.00. Unless the trucks are totally rusted out they should fetch $1000 each or more.

Describe them and put them on a free site, like CraigsList, and see if someone contacts you.
Sometimes local newspapers will let you run ads free or very low cost.
The are hundreds of people who would restore them, if you can find them.

A full size truck, any condition, is worth $400-$500 for the scrap steel alone, so don't take much less than that. Sold a 63 Nova last year that was a basket case - no engine, rotten tires and interior, terminal rust everywhere - but it had some decent chrome, glass and trim. It went for $1000!

As for collectors - any vehicle can be restored, but only some vehicles are worth the effort. Depends on condition, rarity, availability of parts, etc. whether anyone would want it.

A friend of mine makes good money buying old cars, selling off any good parts, and hauling the rest to the crusher. He uses Craigslist almost exclusively.

Please don’t sell these trucks to a junkyard before exhausting other options. First place to put a notice (and pictures) would be Craigslist. It is pretty effective.

You might want to check with the Antique Automobile Association and put a notice on their buy/sell forum:

http://forums.aaca.org/forum.php?s=6d6afb70da12b4a64c4041e569a41f25

Here’s a link to a Dodge forum that has a section for used vehicles:
http://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-trucks-41/

These old trucks are getting more and more desirable. And, they’re part of American Automobile history.

I hope you find someone who wants them.

Who would even think of scrapping them. Crazy. Somebody needs those parts. Find someone to help you part them out if you don’t know how or run some posts on Craig’s list.

In other words, I don’t think you should scrap them.

McGarrett~:” I have a pair of old 50’s era Dodge pick-ups that have been sitting in the woods since the 1960’s. “

List them for sale on a prepepper board , or a survivalist board.
Preppers will pay premium for any auto pre-1972, or pre-computer .
Check out your options !

There are lots of auto recycling businesses who will not only buy your junk car, but will tow it away as well. They will pay you between 200 and 400 dollars, depending on how old your dead hooptie is and how many salvageable parts are still left in it.

Try first to sell to collectors. That’s probably what a junk yard would try first, then part them out for serious money to collectors. So, cut out the middle man and check yourself first.

You could search for Dodge truck forums. I’m not familiar with them, but there is a huge VW forum that has a classifieds section that is worldwide. Ads are free.

It wouldn’t hurt to check into a forum for the trucks.

If the whole body is there, and you take them to the junk yard, you'll have to remove the tires and the gas tank to scrap them.
( I would NOT do this)
But if you do that, you should get about 12 cents a pound, making an old vehicle worthy about $400.00 to $500.00.

Before you make a decision, check out LE-Bay 1950 Dodge Truck Parts and see what parts they have for your trucks.
Also check out ROCKAUTO.COM 1950 DODGE TRUCK Parts.
You might decide to rebuild them yourself.
They'd make a great Prepper EMC vehicle.
