I’ve no idea, but it does seem that the recent mass murderers-all young men with serious mental health issues-either were anarchists or left leaning and had parents and/or acquaintances and teachers who were either indifferent or unknowing of the fact that their friend/family member/student was planning to kill people.

I think too many people are too selfish and self absorbed to notice or care when a family member is going down the path to madness or evil, in my opinion. Partial responsibility for these atrocities should belong to them, and the society that fosters that lack of parental involvement-not to unrelated law abiding citizens.

That is for sure-I lost sympathy for Brady, too the minute he started letting himself be used as a poster child for gun control...

And if they want to do that, fine-but not on your dime and mine...

No, that was the funny part. I was yelling to my husband and Peter turned around.

So glad someone brought the musical use into this discussion of all things aeolian.

I will take you to task on only one minor point, your description of the mixolydian mode.

You have used a harmonic function (dominant seventh) for an intervallic function (minor seventh) when discussing the interval between A and G in the context of the modes.

Intervals can be major, minor, perfect, diminished and augmented.

Chords can be dominant 7ths, not intervals.

/pedantic soapbox mode

I find that video captivating. I’ve probably watched it 10 times since receiving it in my email yesterday from the leader/founder of an Irish trio. Irish, and all other kinds of folk music, were omitted too. Still, is an interesting overview.

I really shocked my Bass Teacher, when I just opened my mouth and SANG them. [snip] Even though Steve was an Excellent Musician and Bassist (Played with Peter Frampton for ten years!), he still found it amazing and amusing that I could sing the weirder modes without thinking about it first.

<><><><><><

My teacher (who studied with Coltrane’s teacher - just wanted to drop that in there) simply applied the do re mi syllables to modes, so to sing the aeolian mode, you’re just singing the major scale (ionian mode) starting with la.

But having memorized the modes and singing them without thought, it’s pretty impressive.

Now if you can sing diabolus in musica out of the air ...

Solfeggio is a brilliant system for teaching melody (and sight-singing).

Brother Guido did a good job!

It is so exciting that we have had teachers who are connected with the Giants! My Voice teacher with whom I studied for 15 years, studied with Marjorie Lawrence and Renata Scotto.

So we have been in GOOD company! :-)

Thanks for your kind words yesterday. A+++ on your poem. I was on airplanes all day yesterday, Newark to Charlotte, and then Charlotte to Vegas. My back is feeling it today.

Thanks— made it safely to Sin City. Or has Washington taken that name away from Las Vegas?

Thank you!

And in my line of work, I can feel your pain-Salonpas or Icy Hot are my favorites for the stressed back...
