Death of Tucker the Peace Dog touches hundreds

By DAVE BAKKE (dave.bakke@sj-r.com) The State Journal-Register Posted Jan 31, 2013

Tucker the Peace Dog died last Saturday morning in the arms of his owner, Jill Grove. For four years from 2001 to 2005, Tucker and Jill appeared at numerous assemblies at Springfield elementary schools.

Tucker and his message of peace had a lasting impact for hundreds of students. Some of those kids found a friend in that golden retriever. Tucker was someone they could talk to — more specifically, someone they could write to. Here are excerpts, just as they were written, from letters to Tucker from two of those kids after he visited their schools:

“I am being treated different by the children in my neighborhood. They are calling me fat girl, fatty and big girl. I ask them to please stop. I try to tell them how I feel but I come to you for advice ...”

“I have a big problom. Nobody whats to play with me. Some day I will find a friend mayby. I am lonly when theres nobody here. My mother doseont love me and my dad. Can you help me?” At the end of that letter, the student’s principal attached an explanatory note. The student wanted to write to Tucker because, the student said, “he understands.”

Tucker always replied to the letters. Jill created stationery for him with his paw print signature. Some of those letters are surely in cedar chests or scrapbooks around town. Even 10 years after Tucker attended assemblies, he was recognized on Springfield streets. He was probably wearing the blue and white Peace Dog cape Jill’s mother made for him to wear during his school visits.

Just a little uplifting story for us dog lovers today.

"I’m also pretty sure Tucker knew that there would be heartaches when he left me, but trusted that I, who loved him more than anyone, would know that he came here when he was needed and stayed, touching the hearts and lives of adults and children. And after his years of service and heart touching, needed to rest to get ready for his next adventure. He has an important job coming up.”

So, let’s get this straight - you’re asking an animal that uses his tongue as toilet paper to have enough sense to help you? Until Fido comes up with a solution, perhaps you should pay a bit more attention in English class.

PS - Nice pix of canine fecal matter being spread over Blubella’s chin. Ugh.

Doggie ping

Can we get some sympathetic comments about the loss of poor Tucker, the Peace Dog, who lit the lives of many children on this thread? May he R.I.P. (no pun intended)

My first thought too. Glad to know I’m not alone in thinking this was just a load of dog poop.

Some of these kids had serious life issues, and the appropriate action was for them to write letters to a dog!?

Well of course, because the caring dog wrote back.

Madness. The loony left couldn’t just stick with reality, and simply let the kids spend time with a sweet-natured dog.

And why am I not surprised that this story included a sympathy play of the lesbian card.

RIP, Tucker. You didn’t know you were being used.

I knew when I posted this article those that have no compassion over dogs and how they bring joy to many would post vile replies since they are incapable of reading no further than the title of the article sadly.

These are kids. C’mon.

No wonder I like my dog better than people.

p.s. Uh, try using the correct word, which is “losing” not “loosing.” Losing, loser. Loosing, looser.

When you lose weight, your clothes become looser. When you can’t express even iota of compassion for another human being, you’re a loser.

Maybe you would have picked up on the distinction had you paid a bit more attention in English class.

Jill is not only dealing with Tucker’s death, but with the impending death of her longtime life partner, Donna Brown.

Well, I do love dogs, and I know that they bring joy to people’s lives — including mine — but, I’m sorry, this story is not a good example.

Aren’t you a charmer, though!

By the way, your English, too, needs improvement. It’s “losing” not “loosing.” You can look it up.
