After a year of medical problems and working too many hours, taking short vacation. Dallas and San Antonio. Soliciting freeper tips and hot spots for senior tourist who can still walk.
Other sites, good food spots, etc. welcome.
Will have car and willing go out of town apiece (intentional solicitous Texas talk).
Just 5 days total.
Cheap shots, zots, derisive humor also welcome.

Schilo’s deli is a must stop for me in San Antonio just for a frosted mug of Spaten Optimator fom the tap or Home made root beer in a frosted mug from the tap.
The rueben is good too.

The Alamo is one of five missions established in San Antonio back in the day. If you enjoy historical site (as I suspect you do), check out the other four missions!

Be sure to check out the Sixth Floor Museum when you’re at Dealey Plaza.
In Dallas — Nasher Sculpture Center is very nice, as is the art museum. In all honesty, the tour of Cowboys Stadium is always a big hit when people visit us — but there’s quite a bit of walking. Drive from Dallas to Ft. Worth and catch the museums there, as well — very nice. Have a great time!
I agree on the Riverwalk and Mercado in San Antonio (and Alamo is right there anyway).
In Dallas, if you like this sort of thing, the Dallas World Aquarium is fantastic, with it’s rainforest exhibit and its not as large as going to a zoo. I took some fantastic photos there last fall with my son and grandson. Some of the birds are flying freely, plus they have a cool aquarium “tunnel” where sharks and such swim around and overhead. Of course it’s downtown Dallas. We took the train in which I don’t think I would do again. I’m not sure how far it is from Dealey Plaza as it’s been a long time since I lived in the area.
There was at one time a self-guided mission tour out of San Antonio. You get a printed guide and drive to each mission at your own pace - can be done over more than one day. Check with the Chamber of Commerce or visitors bureau in SA.

In Forth worth the Stockyards are excellent and the zoo.
The FW Stock show and rodeo is roaring right now.

There is the Texas Ranger Museum. The Dr. Pepper Museum, Dr. P was born in Waco and is older than Coke and Pepsi. Also there is the Suspension Bridge over the Brazos, it is the oldest bridge of its type in the nation and was designed by the man that designed the Brooklyn Bridge.
Also stop at the Texas Capital in Austin. The legislature is currently in session and is always good for political entertainment.

On the other hand, my fear of downtown Fort Worth is far less. It's "Where the West Begins" and, for the most part, a better crowd is found there.
Note that since I'm 70, I remember when downtown areas used to be nice, with motion picture houses, family-oriented restaurants and department stores. The liberal policies that began under JFK and accelerated with LBJ have killed once pleasant urban areas. I've pinged a few people from the area to get their take and to also see if they recall the brutal murder of John Chase that led to the Back the Blue campaign.
Hope you Have a good relaxing vacation. I don’t have any ideas for actual sites to see or things to do as much as a list of BBQ restaurants! LOL (I plan to do a BBQ tour of Texas in the Near future)

I second your suggestion. You will probably have a better time at the other 4 missions than at the Alamo.
I never ate at the Elite without seeing a fender bender in the traffic circle. Something about those guys that just perplex us Texans.
If you have time, touring our great State Capitol is pretty cool.
The grounds and capitol are open to the people, seeing as we own it.
It’s really a must see for anyone living here.

Yes, River Walk - Casa Rio restaurant on River Walk, eat outside, very old landmark. Also Alamo, and Mexican Market. This is the best time of year - no 105 temps.
I was a little let down with the malts.
No one makes a decent malt anymore, but the burgers and fries just rocked.
You have been given some good advice. I will say again....... that the San Antonio Missions are one of my favorite destinations. They are an easy drive from the Alamo. Ft Worth has some nice museums if you like art.

No way will I get near Fair Park any more. It was still borderline OK around 1981 or so but that whole area is doing its best to become Detroit South. I can fully understand why Jerry Jones opted to locate Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. It's a shame that the thugs have ruined that area since the "House that Doak (Walker) Built" used to be in a great, safe, family-friendly area with the intriguing Art Deco buildings.
Yeah it is a shame the architecture is cool.

Check out the new Omni hotel in Dallas (near the convention center) especially at night when it’s all lit up. Get a drink and sit by the pool or whatever. You won’t be disappointed.

I think Waco is wonderful! And I can understand why Ken Starr (yes, that one) fled the leftist Malibu, California area for God's Country of Central Texas to take on the presidency of Baylor University.
By the way, here's a link to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum just off I-35 north of Waco. It's a great place to visit, both fun and educational.

We stayed in Plano and took the train to the State Fair on the same day Oklahoma and Texas were playing in the Cotton Bowl. Only went because it was on my bucket list. I’m an OU grad but chose to wear neither red or burnt orange that day, cause I now live in Texas. Train trip was delightful and non-stop to the Fair, just crammed with football fans. Didn’t realize there were so many things that you could wear with cowboy boots.
Other than the fair, wouldn’t give you a plug nickel for Dallas - love Fort Worth though.
