Elton, the "Gay" Dog, Spared the Gas Chamber

A dog in Tennessee whose owner dumped it at a shelter because he thought it was gay was saved from euthanasia at the last minute by a kindhearted animal lover.

The dog was left with a rabies control shelter in Jackson, Tenn., this week “not because he’s mean or tears things up… But because his owner says he’s gay!” the group Jackson TN Euthanasia, which tries to find homes for dogs in kill-shelters, posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

“He hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away because he refuses to have a ‘gay’ dog!” the group wrote in a post that went viral, leading to thousands of comments online and hundreds of people calling the shelter.

One of those callers was Stephanie Fryns, a veterinary tech from Jackson, who rescued the bulldog-mix. She named him Elton.

Fryns, who owns four dogs, told ABCNews.com that she saw Elton on an adoption website and had made plans to rescue him even before his story went viral.

Fryns said the pooch weighed 50 pounds, and “was pretty friendly so far. He’s pretty scared of everything, which is understandable. But he loved the car ride.”

She said bulldog and bull-mixes routinely showed up in the area’s shelters because of a widespread and illicit interest in dog fighting.

Elton, she said, had some redness on his ears but it was impossible to say if they were bites from other fighting dogs. She doubted he had been fought routinely because he was “submissive.”

Homosexual behavior has been recorded in more than 1,000 different animal species, but it is likely that Elton was simply displaying typical dominance behavior when mounting another male dog, rather than being gay.

Photobucket Dogs will hump (or be humped) by almost anything. To suggest that the pooch is gay is ignorant ... by both the dog's former owner and by sympathetic homosexual activists. Dogs and other animals exhibit this behavior because they ARE animals. This is what separates humans from animals.

So when they attempt to “mount” a human’s leg, does that make them zoophiliac (into bestiality) too? Answer also “no”.

Just looking at him I’d say he is a transgender dog

If he was worried about having a gay dog, why did he name it Elton?

Oh dear. Our dog, when we first got her, would try to hump us, her towels, her dog bed - she’s into transsexuality, cross-species sex, omnisex.

No. She was just trying to be dominant - she had to learn she was low dog, not top dog.

We had a rabbit that humped his mother and father - dominant little booger that he was.

My two “fixed” female dogs do that to me, and do it to each other as well. They are weird, but I doubt they are lesbians.

My two male poochies(Maltese/Pomeranian mix and Shih Tzu) hump each other all the time, especially after they eat..they get excited and hump each other..for this guy to say his dog was “Gay” is ridiculous..ALL dogs do it, male, female, some dogs hump everything in sight its just what dogs do

To suggest an animal is “gay” is to suggest that it prefers the same sex. This has never been observed in nature, however. Animals, being what they are, just react to their drives with anything they see. Mostly this is due to captivity, which is hardly a natural environment.

It sounds like the rescuer named him Elton.

Yes, the rescuer adopted it with the new name Elton. This makes me wonder, however, of the implications. Is this rescuer now going to encourage the dog to be gay?

The owner that gave this dog up is a low information voter.

Why is everything symbolic? Why can’t things just be what they and nothing more?

The media buzz is obviously not about how this dog humps or doesn’t hump. It’s to damn the owner as being gayophobic (or whatever the word is) and make us more tolerant etc etc.
