Connecticut Couple Honored as 'Longest Married' in U.S.

A Connecticut couple who tied the knot over 80 years ago will be named the longest married couple in the U.S.

John and Ann Betar of Fairfield, Conn., said "I do" on Nov. 25, 1932, and have been happily married for 80 years. Together they have five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The couple was selected for the 2013 award by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a Christian marriage enrichment group based in San Bernardino, Calif., that organizes a search each year to promote the virtues of lasting marriages and inspire young couples.

"What an inspiration Mr. and Mrs. Betar are to all of us. They made a commitment to each other 80-plus years ago and they have kept that commitment over these many years. They truly are a sign of hope to us all," Worldwide Marriage Encounter's Ron and Judy Pekny said in a statement.

An award ceremony will take place on Saturday at the Fairfield, Conn., home of one of the Betars' granddaughters, Heather Mitchell.

Before their 80th wedding anniversary in November, John and Ann Betar told ABC News that they considered themselves "blessed."

Why doesn’t somebody for once do a movie based on this showing a marriage that works and is happy. No reason you can’t do a good movie based on stuff like that. They used to all the time (in the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 30’s and 40’s).

We’ve been married for 34 years.

I’m the record in my work department, and I’m only 53.

There are plenty of multiple marriages and couples living together. They all look at me like I have green hair.

One day the conversation was on the number of lifetime sex partners and when I said “1”....I was told I was crazy and everyone laughed.

Funny though, it’s not me crying at Christmas because I’m alone, it’s not me 50 years old hanging out at bars trying to meet someone, and it’s sure not me on antibiotics....

“We’ve been married for 34 years.”

Congratulations.

On June 6th (she chose D-Day so I would remember our anniversary) we will mark 37 years of our mutual life sentence.

It has not always been easy, but it has been very good.

Wow, outstanding! I know a couple that made it to 77 years.
The groom was a few days shy of 100 when he passed away last year.

you’re very blessed! Congraulations on your good fortune :) I keep being told by others that I need to sleep around if I’m ever going to find a husband...and I refuse to do that.

The bad news is, it’s a virtual death sentence when you are announced to the be oldest in the nation or the world.

Because it tends to be boring. When you have daytime soap couples that are happy and stable, it tends to bore the pants off the viewers. It’s the drama and conflict that makes for compelling viewing.

[This long and happy marriage would] tend to be boring.

I know that's the conventional wisdom but I don't think so if it were done right. For example, you had a healthy, happy marriage in "Best Years of Our Lives" (Myrna Loy and Fredrick March) that was compelling in the context of a well-conceived, well-directed, and well-acted story.

What's needed these days is more imagination and fire in your gut to make movies that tell a good story with subject matter that lifts up and betters the viewer.
