When you fight the law, the law usually wins.
A couple was arrested after their argument over who was the greatest guitarist of all time became so heated that Motel 6 staff was forced to call the Brook Park police.
The boyfriend was screaming on behalf of Slash, lead guitarist for Guns and Roses. The girlfriend was jumping for Eddie Van Halen, namesake of 80s rockers Van Halen.

Wait, what was the right answer? Segovia?
What losers! Every sane person knows it’s a tie between Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Sheesh... everyone knows it’s Jimmi Hendrix!
Gary Moore. Hands down. No contest.
I grew up listening to Van Halen (DLR era)and GNR. Each generation differs. What I have in common is both bands disintegrated because the lead axe and frontman hated each other.
But of course! A good argument could be made for Duane Allman. Both of these morons are GUILTY!!
No one can match Rory Gallagher!!!!
Iommi, let’s just stop right there. It’s not about technique, it’s about creation.
Clearly the boyfriend was in the right.
No, it isn't. In the world of pop music, it's a tie between Eddie Lang and "King" Bennie Nawahi. In the world of classical music, it's probably Andres Segovia.
They’re both wrong. It’s Jimi Hendrix, but that’s only because Chuck Norris doesn’t play guitar.
pete townsend.
“Clearly the boyfriend was in the right.”
That geezer’s cruisin’ for bruisin’!
Slash? WTF? He’s a hack. There’s lots of guys in Cleveland that can cut his head!
Here’s just one, that I’ve recorded with;

The Yardbirds had three of the best in succession...Clapton, Beck, and Paige.
(I don’t know what order, but it is an impressive roster!)
All great guitarists will be on display from fans here.
I’d like to suggest the ability to put the sounds together with layers of complexity takes another talent altogether.
My vote is for, Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew.

Ooops...spelled PAGE wrong, I think?
Slash, Van Halen? Knee there!
I think the fact that Zappa and Fripp chose Belew to be in their bands speaks volumes.
Randy Rhodes.
Yngwe Malmsteen.
Kirk Hammet.
They look so YOUNG!
Thanks for the memories! :-)
He also worked with the Talking Heads and David Bowie.
My list, Hendrix, Clapton, SR Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman.
IMHO the Reverend Willie G beats them both.
I agree with your list.
I would add.
Best technician: Robert Fripp
Best electronic experiments: Adrian Belew
And, I would put Belew as the most underrated.
Rhoades - darn shame he died so young.
Yngwie - if you’ve heard one Malmsteen solo, you’ve pretty much heard them all.
Hammett - good player; great combination of technique and soul. Too bad his drummer’s such a twit...
I think Metheny has him beat in that department
Iommi, along with Jimmy Page, is the master of the heavy riff. I also have a lot of respect for him because he plays with prosthetic fingertips on his fretting hand.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails also found Belew.
Mine: Hendrix, EVH, Clapton, Santana, Gilmour, SRV, Zappa. Subject to change without notice. :)
I think Pat read Belew’s book.
Too broad a question to answer. Hell, Charo was (or I suppose is)one hell of a Flamenco player and she's been honored for it too. I'd say that they were arguing over greatest ROCK guitarist, in which case they are BOTH wrong in not stating Jimmy Hendrix.
I lean toward Stevie Ray Vaughan as being my favorite, but as a Tennessean, I’ll be danged if I let this thread go any further without mentioning Chet Atkins.
I’ll give all posters a pass on this grave insult to Chet, as the discussion was originally in regards to Rock & Roll guitarists... ;)
Just between the 2....hands down Eddie in his day. Slash is good now a days, still not a Eddie when Eddie was in his prime.
Steve Vai, Gary Moore, hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaugh, BB king Yngwe Malmsteen. Yet Yngwe Malmsteen doesn’t play with heart(IMHO) and you hear one of his licks it gets old. But he is good.
One thing that makes such a list hard is that the best musicians aren’t necessarily the best players. Some of my favorite players to listen to I could never really put up as the best raw players. They just have a real pretty sound. Guys like Gilmour, Lowell George, Gary Moore, Buck Dharma (of blue oyster cult), Roy Clark, etc. etc, were/are all good players who I could listen to all day long but I wouldn’t put them up there as “best ever”.
All wrong! My goodness, 5 million records sold to non-discerning musically illiterate public and “underrated”?! Popular crap, remember Sturgeon’s Law, or else I’ll hafta mention Hitler himself and you’ll be screaming about Godwin’s Rule. I’ve seen better guitarists playing street fairs than any of the heavy metal big hair stadium gods! Get real, folks.
Exactly. Technique isn’t everything.
Have none of you heard Jose Feliciano’s spanish guitar album?
The girl was correct in this case. I hope she won the argument.
Hendrix and Bill Nelson (look him up).
I like Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher.
But I would put Jimmy Vaughn over SRV. SRV was derivative.
Check out some of the youtubes from the 2012 Van Halen tour. Eddie is killing it right now. I think sobriety agrees with him ;)
(the guitar work on A Different Kind of Truth is amazing as well. Definitely worth a listen if you are a fan of EVH)
