A Bay Area Hindu mans life has been dramatically altered after accidentally being served a sandwich containing meat on an airplane.
The tenets of Anshu Kumars religion require a strict vegetarian diet, and Kumar had never eaten meat.
Before traveling on Asiana Airlines, Kumar confirmed via email that his in-flight meals would be meat-free, and once on board, a flight attendant assured him again he would receive a vegetarian meal.
But, a few bites in, Kumar noticed an unfamiliar taste, and what he thought might be potato turned out to be meat.
Eating meat, even accidentally, is considered a sin for devout Hindus.
When someone of that background does accidentally eat meat, theres a sense of deep revulsion, agony I would say, said professor Vijaya Nagarajan, a religious studies expert from the University of San Francisco.
Kumar says he is now forbidden to touch the altar where he prays daily for forgiveness, and he must also travel back to India to perform penance.
He said he is also is no longer allowed to eat with his family.
For the person who served the meat, it is of little consequence, but for the person who accidentally ate it for the very first time in their entire life, and for how many generations, its like a break in the fabric of their community, Nagarajan said.
Kumar is asking the airline to label its food.
Consider it an opportunity to get closer to your ancestors. Literally.
Why didn’t he just jump off the plane when he discovered this?
To have lived without having a BLT or a cheeseburger would really SUCK!! Forgot a pepperoni pizza too.
How important and newsworthy. I ate fried puffball slices for the first time in my life a couple of years ago. It really changed my whole life < /sarcasm>
Pilot to stewardess: “Is that whine coming from the engines?”
Y'know ... how about we Americans that have eaten absolute freedom most of our lives, being fed tyranny ON PURPOSE ?
Can WE get the sympathy (and I'll BET a chunk of money) from a sympathetic entity that fed it to us ?
The world is mad and we Americans will die off or be killed, or rise up against the enemy.
“If he’s THAT worried about being served meat, why didn’t he bring his own food? “
Or simply check the sandwich. Of course, that precludes any lawsuit.
Can’t be too trusting.
Just because people can put a plane in the air, doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing.
Whoa, that’s harsh! Going to Hell at 30,000 feet! Gives new meaning to “Mile High Club.”
Suck it up and move on. Take whatever time you need to grieve. Now, move on. Stuff happens.
Is he on his way to Disneyland to see if Donald Duck will hug him with an equal quantity and quality of hugs as oher racially classified park patrons?
I love being a Christian.
I guess you would say the same about Obama. Just suck it up and move on.
Act 10:10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance
Act 10:11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth.
Act 10:12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.
Act 10:13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”
Act 10:14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”
Act 10:15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.”
People in India starving to death and he is freaking about some food.
But, a few bites in, Kumar noticed an unfamiliar taste,
There should be one question asked: Is he still alive and breathing? If the answer is yes (and it obviously is), his god wasn’t so angry at him that he was stricken dead. If the answer is no, then he gets to explain his innocence in whatever afterlife he believes in. Problem solved.
A lot of Obama supporters on this thread. Religious freedom and the Constitution have been overturned, and it’s a joke.
“I guess you would say the same about Obama. Just suck it up and move on.”
Of course! Unless you have a time machine, you have to deal with reality. He ate meat. We have Obama. Grieve and move on now.
Don’t worry. I’m sure it was only horsemeat.
Looks like Christians are the only religious people
that its okay to insult in this day
Every third-world country cult must be honored.
Didn’t realize it was a 20 ounce medium rare prime rib until after he finished it.
Truth be told - he is probably freaking out because he liked the way it tasted.
Do you get a welfare check or something? Those of us in the real world, have to respect our customers, or we start losing money. I come across, “the customer is always wrong,” types everyday, who think their mistakes are the fault of the customer. It sucks. Do you work for the government? It must be great never having to worry about incompetence. Some of us have to live in the real world. You may hate the idea of the free market, but it’s a reality for a lot of us. And we get sick of having to deal with the incompetence of others. Good thing our soldiers don’t have your lackadaisical attitude. Lives are at stake.
Being from SF, I’m sure he’s been “served meat” before.
The voice of reason....
Just yesterday, I found out a business charged me for a returned check. I knew it shouldn’t have been returned. I checked with my bank, and I found out this business never even attempted to make submit the check. So, according to you, I should just pay the $180 + they charged me for their mistake? Sorry, I disagree with you 100%. The only mistake is if I ever use them again. That’s why I hate doing business with people like you. I shouldn’t have to pay for your mistakes. If I made such a mistake, I wouldn’t expect my customers to suffer for a mistake I made. Face it, you are a classic socialist.
If a business promised to deliver him something and they failed, that’s the businesses problem. To think otherwise is communist. If you went into a restaurant and ordered filet mignon, and were brought tofu, and were charged the full price, should I say to you, “you should have brought your own filet mignon.” Obama has converted the majority of Freepers to socialism.
and now that you are no longer a true "vegan" LIVE IT UP, ENJOY, WHAT MORE CAN HAPPEN...learn the joys of a "whopper", a standard B.L.T., delve into the wonders of Kentucky fried chicken!!!!!your whole life lies before you and you have a lot of catching up to do (really, God doesn't care)
I certainly would check the sandwich completely, it wasn't all that long ago an airline caterer was investigated for placing used vaccination syringes in sandwiches.
First off, if he’s lived in the United States for any amount of time and ever eaten food he did not himself prepare I’m sure he’s consumed meat at some time accidentally.
Secondly, keeping the above in mind, how can he ever rely on anyone else to prepare his meals, certainly not an entity as impersonal as an airline.
Third, go home!
If you have such religious food restrictions with severe penalties, I suggest you purchase & prepare your every meal; & not depend on others to protect your virtue. Your virtue is yours alone to protect.
Clearly, the meat prohibition is total & severe. Dependence on ignorant others is irresponsible, & especially so, when those others consider such prohibitions to be nonsense.
IMO, this man has no one to blame but himself, regardless of any assurances he may have received from the airline.
I like that spunk!
I wish I was seated next to him...
“So, are you gonna finish that? Cuz I’m still starving.”
I went through a very strict vegan phase. To prevent any accidental consumption of meat products, I carried my own food everywhere. it was important to me that I not consume certain foods. Had I accidently eaten meat, I'm sure whoever gave it to me would apologize, but the damage would have been done
I guess it just wasn't that important to this guy.
If tasting meat means this guy’s family must shun him at mealtimes, maybe it’s time for him to take a good, hard look at his religion. Just saying.
Funny how the Bay Area CBS will report on this story with the deepest reverence for the man’s beliefs, and yet with Ash Wednesday and Lent soon upon us, I’m betting there are those at the same organization just chomping at the bit to ridicule Catholics who will receive ashes on their foreheads and abstain from meat on Fridays between now and Easter. I wonder how CBS would have handled the reportage if this had been a Catholic inadvertently served meat on a Friday during Lent?
Good thing he was only Hindu. If he were a Mohammadan, heads would roll.

Looks like you figured it out, those that make their own “Gods” with their hands must be respected, what happened to nick?
If you explain to CBS that the 40 days of lent are in respect to the 40 years of Tammuz’ life, and that friday is Dagon’s day thus fish must be eaten, inrespect of the pope’s fish hat, perhaps they will see that those customs are just as man made as hinduism and cut you some slack?
