Birthday shoutout: Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin turns 49 years old today, still relatively young and poised for the third act of her public life, whatever she chooses for that to be. Act I: Ambitious young woman rises through the ranks in local Alaskan politics to become the state's youngest governor (and first female governor). Picked in 2008 as the unconvential running mate for Republican John McCain's presidential bid. Her presence on the ticket certainly didn't help McCain, but her image as a folksy soccer mom and an arch-conservative firebrand energizes her own base and she becomes a Tea Party icon. Act II: After McCain's loss in 2008, Palin returns to Alaska and to her job as governor, but her heart isn't in it. Having gotten a taste of the national stage, the idea of running the nation's most remote state no longer excites her. She resigns from that position before her term ends and announces that she has bigger fish to fry. She writes a couple of books, does a couple of reality TV shows, and makes vast sums of money for speeches and TV appearances promoting the Tea Party and conservative causes. She endorses candidates across the country but shows little interest in re-entering the world of politics herself. So now, on her 49th birthday, we await her third act. Will she be content to stay in her current lucrative role of trying to influence those who are actually in power? Or will she at some point - perhaps in 2016 - feel the itch to return to politics and chase after the power herself? The only thing that seems certain at this point is that she has no desire to leave the public eye.

If she were a President, she’d be “Babe-raham Lincoln.”

The left is nothing but a bunch of failed, nihilistic, materialistic, narcissistic, self-absorbed idiots.

Um, show me again where the Left failed?

They succeeded beyond their imaginings. Palin has been marginalized. The sheep voters, the FSA, they will never see anything but Tina Fey and the porn videos.

Palin's Act 3 will be to go back to Wasilla, write a few books with six-digit advances, make Todd sammiches and fade away. She'll be fine.

Happy birthday, Sarah. You are a child of God with a gift to share with the rest of us. God bless you in your decisions and your actions, whatever they are.

You have been a force for positive change in the world already, but you are not done.

Before he selected her, his campaign was moribund and she single-handedly brought it to life.

McQueeg "rally" (LOL) before selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate ....

Palin/mcqueeg RALLY after the selection of Sarah Palin as his VP ...

In order to be successful at the national level — and by that, I mean winning the White House — Sarah Palin would really have to undergo a fundamental transformation. She would need to become fully educated on the details and the intricacies of foreign affairs, because there would always be a Katie Couric from the left-wing news media establishment, eager to trip her up on those details.

She would need to become more cultured and sophisticated, and that would probably mean losing at least some of that folksy charm that was so endearing to the Tea Party. I’m not sure many of us want that. I don’t mean that she needs to stop speaking simply and plainly, which is an asset that was highly valued by Midwestern presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Harry Truman.

The GOP-E was complicit in the attacks as well. Remember Kevin McFadden, Nicolle Wallace, Steve Schmidt, etc during the 2008 campaign itself, and then how the establishment hung her out to dry after Tucson?

Actually they may have tried to hang her out to dry but since the names Kevin McFadden, Nicolle Wallace, Steve Schmidt do not ring a bell with me tells me that they failed and Sarah Palin is still wet.

I agree with that but when I hear the term “fundamental transformation” it’s a red flag for RINOism.

Maybe I’m naive and not up to all the new culture and stiff but I thought that term refers to the military. Maybe I’m missing something about the adultery and fornication reference.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I think that in order to be more appealing to more voters, she needs to dial it back on the backwoods colloquialisms and speak plain English, as though she graduated from Harvard Law.

That most definitely does NOT mean abandoning Christian conservative principles in any way, or to any degree. But it does mean presenting those principles in more sophisticated, more presidential ways.

Click here to listen to the number two song on the Billboard Hot 100 the day Sarah Palin was born (I never particularly cared for the number one song on that day).
