I have always had herding dogs. I love the collie pup. I’ve had two tri-colored shelties. We now have a Pembroke corgi — and we just love this little fellow. Lots of personality, and at age 10, still chasing the ball and the frisbee.

That looks just like our tri colored Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Mackenzie.

Corgis are great! Ours will chase a ball all night and is a social butterfly.

Rocky is growing so fast. That photo was taken at about 12 weeks. He is now almost 18 weeks old and he is a bit over 30 lbs.

Here's the page from yesteday's N.Y. Times that has an ad for the Westminster Kennel Club 67th annual dog show. That would make this one the 137th annual. I wouldn't mind seeing the "War Dogs on Parade" feature.

Just to add sometimes the stuff the announcer says is mistaken ( or fantasy). The Belgian Tervuren for instance doesn’t have a different outline than the other Belgians. It just has a different coat color & length.

question to those who know breed characteristics -

why are Alsations shown with their hips “pushed” down low. When you see non-show Alsations/German Sheppard's, their backs are level.

Have always been curious what working task that is supposed to mimic.

I’m not a Shepherd person but it’s just traditional to show them in that pose. Their outstanding feature is the flying trot and I guess they want them to look like they’ll spring into it from a stand still.

His full Tervuren coat is a little much for summer in southern Louisiana, so he gets a shave every May. It grows back in well in time for our annual Christmas trip to see my folks in PA...

The GSD should have won the herding class. Two reasons I think she didn’t even though she has won every other title under the sun. The reasons are the judge handled GSDs and the handler was the worst I have ever seen. Could not control the dog. She has the most beautiful long stride gate I have ever seen for a GSD.

I am so disappointed. Terrible to do to a wonderful show dog.

Years ago, Westminster was limited to champions only. This year they opened it up to “class dogs”, or dogs which have not won a championship.

The Old English Sheepdog, a youngster not yet a champion, came up through the ranks to win the Herding Group this evening. This is a major win for a lovely, but very young dog.

"I thought the Tervuren should have won if the GSD didn’t."

Having owned one of each at the same time...

...I will say the Tervs have much more expressive faces and generally goofier demeanors. My Timber (GSD) was a very stoic, spartan machine of a dog that didn't suffer fools. Ranger (Terv) is a clown. When I had both of them it was like living with Clint Eastwood and Borat under the same roof.

The show GSDs (typical of American origin) usually have the sloped backs and thinner bones.

The working GSDs (typical of European origin)usually have more level backs and thicker bones.

I know what you mean. My pit mix is a stoic and stern looking dog but he has a definite goofy side.

Tomorrow is "my" night.

GCH Protocol's Veni Vidi Vici [aka Fifi]

The Fifinator makes her second run at best of group and hopefully, BIS.

She got gypped last year by that creepy Peke "dog".

[she and Halla are of the same bloodlines so we're really rooting for her]

A GSD in the herding class?

Well, I guess that is about right for the AKC idea of herding.

REAL herding dogs herd. They don’t show. For real herding, no one gives a rat’s rear how the dog looks, only what it does.

German Shepherds are titled in herding in Germany, you know.

On the first page of the website below, take note of what animals are behind the German shepherd and his herding dog:

Yeah, I noticed the GSD was pulling her up and down the ring.

Looks like she (the handler) needs some training with the Dog Whisperer or Barbara (Walkies!) Woodhouse !!
