(VANITY) Went to the pistol range today and put some rounds downrange

Being of sound mind (*?*), I stocked up on ammo before that nitwit got reelected so I can go put holes in paper and not have to hunt for ammo. I took my daily carry piece and an older handgun that hasn't seen the light of day since my first CHL class.

What a fine piece of hardware a Browning HiPower 9mm is. I have not shot that thing in years but it made me look good today. Better trigger than my XDm40 and a lot less intimidating, that is one fine old piece of iron.

Did OK with the Springer, but the .40 has a bit more snap and is harder for me to hold on target. I think I did about 4" for my best 25-shot group with the 9mm, prolly 5-6" for the .40 but overall I kicked ass on everyone else in the TargetBastids in Garland, TX.

There was some dude in there next to me with a kid, they were shooting zombie targets with a .22 and were all over the paper. I don't get the fascination with zombies, I mean hell THERE AIN'T NO SUCH THING, but whatever. The other usual suspects were shooting at CHL silhouettes and stuff like that. I kicked their ass. Unusual for me, but I was actually relaxed and shot fairly well at 7 yards.

Buddy of mine, one of my teachers, laughed at anybody who shot at a bigger target than about 3" at the 7 yard line on the carrier. I was never all that hot, my Marine pal is much better than me and possibly even better than the guy who got me started shooting at 3" rings, but it is always fun to blow away everybody else on the line.

OK, pretty thin for competition today, but only the shadow knows ;) I've looked like a fool in there more than I have shined, but today was all mine.

Yay ME!!!

I still kick myself for selling an FN Browning Hi Power. Damn fine pistol, that.

My first one got stolen, I still miss that thing. Ring hammer, bought it from some Deputy Sheriff out in the panhandle, I think he took it away from an illegal.

One stellar handgun the HP. I wouldn’t mind having a new one in .40 someday.

I have always liked the Hi-Power too. No other gun fits my hand as well. Nothing magic about it but it is relatively accurate, extremely reliable and for some reason, just easy for me to hit odd targets with.

Living out in the boonies does have some advantages. I can just go out to my back yard to shoot anytime I want. On the other hand, no high speed internet unless I was willing to pay the exorbitant satellite fees.

I didn’t get to the range today, but after lunch, I went an bought a AR-15 Lower. Will have it Sunday. Now have to save a little for the upper.

Love the Browning. Sweet gun.

I have an XDm-9. Had $400 extra work on it. Trigger, sites, Grips. Love it. It sleeps with my Kimber 45 in the safe.

Sounds like you had fun today.

Semper Fi!

My strategy now is to first buy whatever ammo is available and then buy the gun that shoots it.....

I had to go out today and stopped by the local Wal-Mart. About once or twice a month I stop by and check their ammo selection. I don’t need any, just doing it from curiosity.

It appears to me that they are starting to build their stock of ammo. Still no .22LR or other hot sellers but their shelves are now a bit more than half full. A month or so back they only had a few odds and ends.

Another month and I think the shortage will be only spotty.

Hey RR, well the scattergun is in south TX so I had to do something.

John Moses Browning, he didn’t even live long enough to finish the HP, but I love that thing. Even though it has a disconnect so you can’t drop the hammer w/o a mag in the well. All in all, I’ll prolly look at buying some more mags for that pistol, all I have is the original and some crappy 10-rd junkers. That gun deserves better.

I’m gonna start shopping for a Springfield 5.25 in 9mm as soon as She Who Must Be Obeyed stops birddogging my damn credit card. I think that would be fun, 9mm is fairly cheap in bulk, and it would fit with my lineup of Springers.

Just don’t mention this to You Know Who ;)

Wait until the shortage is over and prices return to normal then stock up on Mec-Gar mags from CDNN. I bought maybe 20 various ones from them after the last ban sunsetted. Now I never need to buy any more.

The Argentine military ones they sell are ok but the springs in them are incredibly strong. I have to use a loading tool to fill one up.

Yeah, feels good to burn some powder....gotta do it just about every weekend.

I am lucky enough to have a range at the house out to 800 yards and a pistol range with some metal plates and place for paper.

Weekend before last was working up a 300 Win Mag load for a new rifle. Was trying to make it fit a crap load (5k bullets) of 168 gr SMK VLD HP I have for my 308. There is no wonder I could not find any reloading data for this bullet. After 60 rounds and a shoulder of hamburger meat, I finally figured it out where it would group. It is a tack driver now at 3100 fps.

This weekend I think we are going to burn up the 800 yarder and do some pistol stuff.

Maybe burn some ribs over some mesquite.....

I receive the CTD catalog along with Sportsmans Guide. I can’t remember which one it was but for the last year or so they have regularly had Puma Knives including the classic “White Hunter” at really bargain prices. I have come very close to ordering one then realize I have a couple of hundred knives and am 66 years old.

Last Christmas I gave a bunch away to my grandson and still have more than I know what to do with. Still if a person is just accumulating a few knives of excellent quality they should buy some of those Pumas.

All the way around, I don’t think you can do better than Puma unless you maybe buy extremely expensive hand made ones.

As far as magazines, CDNN has them both beat in quality and price.

I love my BHPs. Have a couple and after tens of thousands of rounds, still my favorite 9 mm. I even have some of those evil extended mags. One sticks out the handle about a foot. Over the last 5 gun shows, I have only seen one for sale and a year ago, I had the safety officer offer me a cool grand for my Belgian made Hi-power.

Also, I use cheap paper plates and a wide magic marker for targets. More money for ammo!

A bunch of refurbed Belgian Alloy Browning Hi Powers showed up at AIM surplus about a year and a half ago.

I am still kicking myself for not getting one.

In 1992 I bought a new Hungarian FEG copy of the Browning HP for about $200. Had the missing features of later HPs: ring hammer & the grips are painted red inside the magazine well. Blue steel & wood, the only materials a firearm should be made of.

Has worked wonderfully with Mec-Gar magazines & a trove of 9mm I bought back in the days for about $7.00 a box. All steel, lasts forever. I try to forget it was made in Hungary’s largest home appliance factory.
