About 10 years ago, I stopped shooting bucks and only take doe for the freezer.

I had so many racks, I used to nail them to a back yard oak tree and watched the animals chew them for calcium.

Doe have a better taste and are absolutely way more tender than a big old rutting buck.

I mostly let my son and grand children do the shooting and only take a rifle into the woods after they have had their shooting fun.

I do most of the walking and pushing and get great joy when one of the young ones get a deer.

We now have three generations of living hunters {and NRA members} and my family won't be the sheep if the slaughter comes.

Increasingly, we send the Feds a dollar in new taxes, & they put 50 cents worth of bureaucracy in place, fund the program with the other 50 cents, then regulate it to 10 times its original cost & total ineffectiveness.

I lost count how many deer/elk I have taken in my life. About 10 years ago I picked up a bow and other than varmint hunting I don’t hunt with a gun anymore. Now it is all about getting close and besting them in their element to fill the freezer. Most days I carry a .22 and guide my non-adult children. Now the only large animal I hunt is my annual archery elk trip to the mountains.

Over the last couple years I have just sat idle while numerous deer have passed within range just watching them in amazement of how awesome God truly is, and me for getting so close :).

Even beyond that, motivated by their passion for a particular species, sportsmen donate millions more each year to groups such as Ducks Unlimited and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for additional habitat work.

I don't know if it is still true, but DU used to be the largest owner of wetlands in the world. They owned habitat across the entire north and south american continents to preserve it for migrating game. What I've always told leftist enviro-whackos is that if they want to see what real conservation is like, without the threat of government force behind it, they should look at Ducks Unlimited. Hunters put their money where their mouths are. When I was younger by dad and I would buy duck stamps regardless of if we had any intention to go hunting that year or not.

My best friend and I go out hunting every year for the last 13 years. It’s a time to get together, drink some beers, catch up on our lives and just have fun. No women, no work, only phone calls are to say goodnight to our respective kids. Doesn’t matter if we get a deer, it’s the time to spend away.
There’s no trophy hunting, not competition, just having fun.
