Valve Moves a Step Closer to Steam Box, Releases Steam for Ubuntu

Valve Software, the owner of Steam video game distributing system, on Thursday announced the release of its Steam for Linux client. The launch of the Steam client for Canonical’s Ubuntu moves Valve a step closer to creation its own Linux-based low-cost personal computers for gaming. What remains to be seen is how well will titles developed with Windows in mind work under different OS.

"The introduction of Steam to Ubuntu demonstrates growing demand for open systems from gamers and game developers. We expect a growing number of game developers to include Ubuntu among their target platforms. We're looking forward to seeing AAA games developed with Ubuntu in mind as part of a multi-platform day and date release on Steam," said David Pitkin, director of consumer applications at Canonical.

LOL - they sure did a number on the release of Impire yesterday, making its distribution a pain.

I use to love to play Day of Defeat (a steam/valve game). They updated it and I lost interest but it was a great game.

It's not the first steam client for linux, FWIW.

I don't have any experience with the competitors (www.steampowered.com, kde-look.org...Steam+Companion) or this offering from valve, but will say that the kids who inhabit this house got plenty of use playing steam games on a Windows platform.

From the first link at #7:

**************************************EXCERPT**************************************

If that wasn't big enough news for gamers, Steam is also putting every Ubuntu-enabled title on sale for 50-75% off until Monday, February 21 at 10:00am PST. Their initial game offering consists of 60 games including such popular titles as Half-Life, Counter-Strike and the free to play Team Fortress 2. For hardcore Linux fans, "as a launch giveaway and for the hardcore gamers who need every item in Team Fortress, for a limited time when you play Team Fortress 2 on Ubuntu you will get a Tux penguin item to keep or trade."

Steam developed for Linux a while back but stopped. There’s a push toward Linux for desktops with major OEMs, and I think this is becoming a sell point for gamers. I’ve been on Ubuntu for years and love it. I use Fedora for my home servers.

I still have a Win7 machine for gaming, but most of my day-to-day is on Linux.

I'm a Luddite (in a way) and am very comfortable on the command line. Moved from a DOS/DesqView environment to Win 3.1 around the time Windows 95 was popular, and in 1998 moved to Linux. Redhat at the time (although I'd dabbled in shell accounts at a couple ISP's before putting linux on my own hardware), then Mandrake, then Gentoo. I still run Gentoo, but most of the applications I use are console-based. I'm so old school, I use FVWM as a window manager! Have setup other WM's for family members, but they prefer Windows.

Anyway, like you, most of my day-to-day in on Linux, but of the 7 to 12 computers on the local network, only three that I personally claim are running linux (ancient screenless laptop as mail and print server, some old K8 machine in a desktop case as file / photo / music repository and server, and I do most of my keyboarding and viewing on a $150 NC6000 from ebay). The other machines are WinXP or Android (close to linux) or iPods.

Here's my question (I have not performed *ANY* research on this at all:

When I install Civ 5, it will try to install the windows Steam client. If I install the Linux version of Steam first, can I play Civ5 through WINE on the Linux Steam client?

I don’t see Linux displacing windows any time soon in any market that it hasn’t already.

I write software for a living and even I hate linux. I spend more time holding linux’s hand and wet nursing it than I do getting anything done with it. Ubuntu included.

Steam is scared of Ouya, and for good reason.

It’s good to see some competition in the Linux OS universe in the gaming space, but this is still trapped by AMD/ATI’s failure to implement proper GPU drivers OR to release source code for the Linux community to build proper drivers for the Linux and BSD universe.
