TCM movie alert: "Ben-Hur" (1959) tonight at 8:PM E.S.T.
Turner Classic Movies ^ | 1959 | Wm. Wyler

Posted on 02/16/2013 4:38:40 PM PST by ReformationFan

The 1959 winner of 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Actor is on TCM tonight at 8:00 PM EST. It's easy to see how far our culture has fallen when a pro-Christianity film like this couldn't be made by Hollywood today.

My favorite scene:

That scene always makes me cry. We DVR’d The Greatest Story Ever Told and fell asleep last night to it. It’s a beautifully done movie.

No commercials on TCM. Uncut, and uninterrupted.

Charlton Heston discusses training for the "Ben-Hur" chariot race with renowned stuntman Yakima Canutt.

What a great man, great American and a great actor IMO. He is sorely missed.

I wish TCM would show The Fishaerman with Anthony Quinn. I’m not Catholic, but I loved how it showed the traditions of the Conclave.

TCM has no commercials ... one of the few things Ted Turner got right.

It would be very timely with a new Pope coming soon.

It looks like TCM is showing it Monday Morning, 2/18/13 at 6:30AM EST. I may DVR it.

I saw it once but it’s been many years.

Awesome! I haven't yet watched Ben Hur, at least that I remember, maybe as a small child. I don't have TV and this is one of those rare times that I wish I did. Is it on the net in it's entirety anywhere?

Indeed. At Christmas time, I showed one of my church deacon’s young children the nativity scene from Ben-Hur:

They were a little young for the whole movie but I thought the nativity scene was great.

About a decade or so back we had a new multiplex open up near us. They showed a 70mm print of Ben Hur opening weekend on their biggest screen. Amazing experience.

Ramming speed!!

Already tuned in. One of the classics. Sad to even wonder if a movie like this or any of the other biblical epics could or would be made in today’s world.

Indeed. It’s very reverent. I think “The Robe” and “The Big Fisherman” did the same thing, i.e., the viewer never sees the face of Christ.

I haven’t seen the 1959 version of “Ben Hur” since I saw it in a movie theater in 1962. More recently, I saw the 1925 version. This is a silent film, so it is best seen in a movie theater with a live organist.

Umm, actually the Romans and other ancient peoples never used galley slaves. Galleys were rowed by free sailors.

Galley slaves didn’t come in until artillery demoted the rowers from potential fighters to mere propulsion.

Continues to be one of my favorite movies.

I always watch this movie during Holy Week. Some critics today continue to pan it, which tells me it's a winner and will stand the test of time.

I agree with your comment.

I've always felt that this way the genius of William Wyler. He left the image of Christ for the audience to discern.

This is a great movie and a better book. The first couple of chapters are amazing IMO. If you'd like to check it out, you can find Ben Hur as a free download at Project Gutenberg. I'd strongly recommend taking the time to read the first couple of chapters. It describes the simple and powerful faith of the three wise men and their first meeting.
