Another TCM alert: tonight at 8PM it's airing "Doctor Zhivago". Definitely worth seeing as Hollywood film that actually showed how terrible life was in Soviet Russia. The only thing I don't like about it is its hero cheating on his cute wife with Lara. Otherwise, a truly great film with Rod Steiger stealing the show as the opportunistic lawyer Komarovsky.
Zhivago: Peter O'Toole Tonya: Audrey Hepburn Lara: Sophia Loren(Mrs. Carlo Ponti, the producer who originally bought the rights for her to star in it) Komarovsky: Marlon Brando or James Mason Pasha/Streilnikov: Omar Sharif(he originally wanted this role but David Lean cast him as the lead instead).
My favorite scene is where they cut to the house covered in snow.

The mother’s funeral scene with the music is haunting.
I remember seeing “Dr. Zhivago” in the post theater at Camp Zama, Japan, in 1966. We were mesmerized. More than 25 years later we watched it again some 15 years later on VHS, and found it to be boring.
Interesting trivia- the score was created by Maurice Jarre, father of French composer Jean Michel Jarre.
OMG! I can’t imagine this wonderful film cropped down to a 4:3 aspect and played from a fuzzy VHS machine.
This film is just glorious in 1080p BluRay.
conflict tonight.....Walking Dead or Dr Zhivago?
I thought it was visually stunning and like everyone else loved the music.
It was basically a very good movie. About the only fault was it was really long.
I had a high school buddy who worked as a theater usher (remember those?) when this movie was released. It played so long in the theater that he and the other usher memorized it word for word.
Excellent film. Some of my Russian ancestors fought in the Russian Revolution, but for the wrong (Red) side. Family history, I’m trying to verify it somehow so I’m not 100% here, says my great-great grandfather was one of the generals who knew Lenin although the story is he told his son to “get out of here” and go to America. Later on, my great-grandfather was drafted to fight World War I in the American Expeditionary Force.
Too depressing to watch. It reminds me of Obama’s plans for the rich and the middle class. What kind of people will be crowding into my home and hanging their laundry in my kitchen next year?
It’s an epic soap opera.
They will probably be people from a Latin American country who entered this country during Obama’s gift of instant citizenship to all except Europeans.

One of 2 or 3 movies I was roped into seeing around the mid sixties as a date movie.
Not my cup of tea. No...more specifically I hated thiis movie, ‘sound of music’ and a re release of ‘gone with the wind’. Women! They got me to many things I did not want to do.
Thank you for the heads-up! This is my favorite film so I’ll DVR while I’m watching Downton Abbey. Spend tomorrow with Dr. Z and Lara.

I saw the film at the Paramount Theater in Hollywood, Calif., in August, 1966.
Definitely a candidate for the best movie of all time.

Ran is stunning.... beautiful and brutal. Another one of Kurosawa’s many great movies.

Agree. After seeing Ran I was hooked on Kurosawa and his work.
The beautiful Latra(Julie Christie) was 17 when she was banging both Komorovsky and that other creep. So she moves on to a married Dr. Zhivago. It was a convincing love story and Geraldine Chaplin was the perfect(strait-laced) loser in the (not) triangle.
Thank you. I’m watching. It’s one of my favorites of all time. When i first saw it as a young woman, all i saw was the romance. Now,all i see is dangerous foreshadowing. Reminds me of “he who beats his swords into ploughshares will be the slave of those who don’t.”
When I first saw Zhivago in the mid sixties I though the black headed one, (his wife) was prettier than Lara.
I saw it recently and there was no doubt Julie Christie was way prettier.
I can’t figure out why the change but in the mid sixties I had a terrible crush on a beautiful black headed girl.
I later married a beautiful blonde or between blonde and light brown.
Once was enough for “Born Free.” Saw that one at Camp Zama as well. I’m betting our situation at the time was considerably more comfortable than yours. Thanks for your service and glad you made it back.

As a consolation prize, Mrs. Z got to leave Russia for a relatively much freer life in Paris while the Doc and Lara stayed behind to only spend a brief time together before being permanently separated with him having a heart attack on a street trying to call out to her and Lara probably ended up dying in a work camp as Yevgraf the commie half-brother surmised so Tonya probably got the better deal in the long run.
I always thought Lara and her bizarre love/hate relationship with Komarovsky provided much greater sparks than her relationship with Zhivago. And in the end, he probably did more actual work in trying to save her than either her psycho/revolutionary fanatic husband or the doctor did.
