Funders

This section of DiscoverTheNetworks examines the immensely wealthy charitable foundations that provide financial backing for leftist groups and causes. These foundations -- sometimes called endowments or charitable trusts -- are nongovernmental, nonprofit entities whose assets are provided by donors and managed by their (the foundations') own officials, who earmark portions of their assets each year for what they consider to be socially useful purposes. Most of these foundations can be classified under the following categories:

  • Community Foundations, which build their endowments through contributions from many donors within a given geographic region, and typically focus on local needs
  • Corporate Foundations, which are private foundations established by for-profit corporations but legally separate from the parent corporations
  • Family Foundations, in which the original donor or the donor's family plays a significant role in governing the foundation
  • Independent Foundations, which are private foundations, usually endowed by one source such as an individual's bequest
  • Operating Foundations, which are private foundations that use most of their income to provide charitable services or programs of their own, rather than making grants to outside organizations
  • Public Foundations, which are public charities that operate significant grantmaking programs

The DiscoverTheNetworks database currently identifies and profiles more than 125 major foundations whose political and philanthropic orientations are generally leftist, and whose combined assets exceed $100 billion. Some of the foundations described in this section are so large that they have single-handedly shaped entire cultural and political movements. (See, for example, the Ford Foundation's role in underwriting The Open Borders Lobby.

Several of the massive, tax-exempt entities profiled in this section -- most notably the Tides Center, the Liberty Hill Foundation, and the Proteus Fund -- are pass-through operations designed to mask the relationship between donor and gift. That is, they take money from donors who specify the precise groups and causes for which they want it earmarked, and in turn funnel that money to those recipients, allowing the donors avoid being publicly associated with the groups being funded. The funds transacted in this manner are called donor-advised funds. (The JEHT Foundation, which closed its doors permanently in 2009, was yet another pass-through.)

As of 2003, America's top left-leaning foundations held $51 billion more in assets than their conservative counterparts (those that consistently funded groups promoting individual rights, a pro-market stance, and limited government). Moreover, the leftist foundations made grants whose combined value was 26 times greater than all the grants awarded by their conservative counterparts. With many billions of dollars at their disposal, the foundations profiled in this section of DiscoverTheNetworks are positioned to permanently shift America's political dialogue to the left through their grant-making power. Leftist activists commonly hold key positions on the staffs and governing boards of these foundations, and often they serve on multiple boards.

Many recipients of foundation money today are the immensely influential activist organizations popularly known as Section 527 Committees. Dedicated to promoting political candidates and agendas, 527s are, by definition, private, nonprofit groups that are less regulated and require less disclosure than other types of nonprofit groups engaged in electioneering. They need not register with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) as “political organizations.” Consequently, they do not have to observe the FEC's strict limits on political contributions. The 527s may collect as much “soft money” as they like from individuals and corporations.

The RESOURCES column located on the right side of this page contains links to articles, essays, books, and videos that explore such topics as:

  • the agendas and funding priorities of George Soros's foundation network, whose flagship is the Open Society Institute;
  • how grants by foundations and corporations provide the economic lifeblood of the left;
  • how the federal government uses taxpayer dollars to fund many leftwing organizations and foundations;
  • requirements that compel foundations to meet race-and-gender quotas not only in the composition of their own respective boards and staffs, but also in the boards and staffs of the organizations to which they make grants; and
  • how the Peace & Security Funders group -- a coalition of charitable foundations -- has undermined America's efforts in the War on Terror.

Trial lawyers have been instrumental in helping the Left's "charitable organizations"

We need to figure out a way to return the favor and sue those Lefty "charitable organizations."

Well we need to stop sending American jobs overseas.

Just saying.

American jobs hire Americans. A proportion of which vote GOP.

Foreign jobs hire ZERO Americans. So no Americans are working, as a result of Foreign jobs.

The result is, fewer Republicans all the time.

Bring back US jobs now.

Is the net address DiscoverTheNetworks.com? If can find the time it may prove to be a good place to find ways to fight back.

I will no longer vote GOP (unless something major changes and we rid the party of the Liberal Republicans which make up most of them.

As far as I am concerned people like McCain can go to hell.

I feel sorry for what he had to endure in the Hanoi Hilton but he no longer is the man he used to be. His mind was bent in Prison.

The very day I left VietNam, was the very day he was shot down over N Vietnam.

Beyond that I have so sympathy for him or his ideas.

You wouldn’t be referring to Steve Mostyn now are you?...; )

Seems more than just a few leftist organizations and wealthy elites seem to be paying little or no taxes when they donate or buddy up to 0. His day is coming. Going to be a hard and long fall once it starts...

Knowing shall ask more dumb questions, may I ask for forgiveness now, so as not to have to ask for forgiveness then?

One (myself included) must get out in front or is that out to the front? It always seems the enemy sneaks up from behind, so it is the stragglers whom are the first to be lost. Making every attempt here to get to the front. May the liberals understand it is they whom are the stragglers.

I don’t know if the type of jobs now worked for two cents a day in China or wherever were worked by Republicans in the past. Plus, more work here means more tax revenue, which means more gubmint handouts and employees, which definitely means more Democrats.

There is one “network” which is the sine qua non of the others. It is the “objective” journalism network. The linchpin of that network, the thing which made it a network, is the Associated (telling word) Press.

Journalism was an entirely different animal before the advent of the telegraph and the AP in the mid-Nineteenth Century era. Before the AP, each newspaper was primarily about the opinions of its printer, much as the EIB is about the opinions of Rush Limbaugh. A cause, and an effect, of the lack of news sources which the public did not in principle have access to was that newspapers were mostly weeklies.

With the advent of the AP, newspaper reporters might work for, say, the LA Times - but they write for the AP as their hoped-for audience. The upshot is that the AP “wire” is a continuous virtual “meeting” of all the major journalism outlets. And Adam Smith told us what to expect from that:

"People of the same trade seldom meet together even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public or some contrivance to raise prices."
The AP, and all “objective” members thereof, constitute a conspiracy against the middle class. That conspiracy attacks the middle class for the simple reason that that is where the competition is: that is where things get done, and that is who tends to get the credit for getting things done. And it is precisely the desire for the credit for all the good things getting done which journalism lusts after. Journalism applies whatever labels it thinks are positive - e.g., “liberal,” “progressive,” “moderate,” “centrist” - to politicians who put PR above all else, and who therefore cooperate continuously with “objective” journalism.

“Objective” belongs squarely in scare quotes for the simple reason that while it is possible, and creditable, to attempt objectivity, anyone who claims to actually be objective is not objective about himself - or much of anything else, in reality.

I’ve said for a while we need a wiki that only vetted people can add to, to expand the entries and connections there.

You are more correct than you know. In a previous life, I was a journalism major and saw these people in their formative stage. To say that they were lazy and arrogant would be an understatement. There is a reason that they hate Sarah Palin with such an intensity and it has even more to do with her intimate knowledge of their profession than her core value conservatism.

But these people don't only go into journalism; they are a major source of new state department hires. The revolving door between journalism and government is legendary. What other two professions share such a common contempt for traditional American values while hypocritically posing as the neutral arbitrators for all that is just and fair?

People like George Stephanopolus are not the exception; they are the rule. We simply do not hear about most of them because they have much lower profile jobs in media and government.

I still have research to perform also.
Right now we are just dancing around but soon it will come to a shooting war.
Some of us will die. I accept that fact.
Chances are that I will be one of the first to go that route.
I just want to be prepared properly so that I know who my real enemy is and who my proxy enemy is.
Chances are that those of those that choose to (actually) fight for our rights will end up dying in vain as I doubt that there are not enough committed individuals willing to join us.
Most will take a “wait and see” position before committing to actual engagement.
Therefore it is critical for people like myself in knowing who we have to prepare to fight and who is just “cannon fodder” for the power behind the throne.
The actual power will be behind well protected walls with well armed soldiers.
They will sit in comfort for they really won’t be doing much (if any) of the actual fighting.
The trick is not to just march up to their gates and start shooting as that would be an absolute folly.
We need to subvert them in ways that will weaken them and give us time to gather the more timid to join once they have seen exactly who the real power mongers are and that the politically and economically powerful are not necessarily the strong, nor the wisest of adversaries.

What we need are methods to undermine their self confidence and delusions and use it to our advantage.

As in the last two words of the “Count of Monte Christo” we will have to “wait and hope”, -— but that was stated AFTER the Count of Monte Christo had already terminated his adversaries and the others were no longer a threat.
