I have been out and about all the live-long day. As of this morning, I was deprived of my Free Republic time over my morning cup of tea. It hurt. Now at my first opportunity, I gingerly tried my bookmark for FR and ta-da! Connected again.

Well done!

Well, I’ve been sick all week with a really crummy upper respiratory infection, taking a strong antibiotic which has its own problems, and been caught up in a web of phone calls mostly resulting in being on hold for up to 45 minutes. Compared to that, getting FR back has TRULY been a good day!!

A while back, Dave Barry had a hilarious column in which he discussed all of (well, a few of) the stupid things that smart presidents have done, and posited that there was an evil machine in the White House which put out a “stupid ray” and made the POTUS do stupid things. As the news on the FR server front seemed to get worse and worse, I began to worry that someone had gotten that from the WH and put it next to the FR server.

Sure hope the “monster server” does the trick, and isn’t affected by the “stupid ray!” It’s great that FR has the money laid aside for the new server - and in hindsight it would have been better to have spent it sooner!

I’m laying on the bed using my belly as a mouse-pad and scrolling down FR with the mouse-wheel. My wife walks in and asks if I would like her to put a movie on. So I raised my mouse at her to show my finger rolling the wheel and told her “I’m busy”.

She laughed so I asked “What? Do I need to stand on my head to look busy?”

I haven’t seen anybody else say it yet, so I will, and flak be damned: Jim needs to hire a different IT guy. This site should not have gone down like it did! It does not cost much to employ best practices like redundancy, db mirroring and failover, etc.—any professional site does it, and we do it at our company. All of the updates from Jim sounded like the server architecture was half-assed and no provision was made for failure.

I’m glad the drive was up, and I hope that Jim R. makes some different choices going forward on the IT side.

My two cents’ worth.

It is his son.

Yes, I know. However, thousands of kind people donate money to Jim to keep this site running, and the amount of money he collects each year is more than enough to do it right. If his son is unable to do the job, then someone else should. If we had an outage like this at my company, the CIO would have been fired.

This isn’t a company, and you don’t have to stay on the site. I love this site, I love the setup, which they developed on their own. Sometimes it goes down. I put up with far worse disappointments where I work day in and day out. And we spend far more on IT than this site does.

Hosting for the traffic we put on this site is probably astronomical, and they are doing it on a shoestring budget, in reality.

I told you it was my two cents’ worth. Didn’t FR collect $350k last year? This is a low-bandwidth, text-based site. Just saying.

Have you looked at the budget? And they barely get the $350k in, mostly because there are a bunch of freeloading bitchers on this site.

You know as well as I that anyone that dares to talk about a better way to operate FR is shot down. Many suggestions have been offered up in the past and been declined.

Of course, the down side is people are not so inclined to donate as they used to.....

No, I have not seen the budget. Please post a link so I can take a look. Does it include a description of the production server environment? That would be very interesting to read.

If my company servers went down that long, I’d have fired the CIO on the spot.

Yes, I know this, but I really couldn’t resist commenting—this was a completely ridiculous event, and the status updates made it sound like some idiot high school kid is in charge of disaster planning and recovery.

But this isn’t a company, in the real sense of the word. This is a single family offering their livelihood for our education and entertainment. Seriously. How many of us are willing to put our lives on the line the same way this family has? If so, do it. Make a better system, since you know how.
