Prison inmates get rescue cats ready for adoption [w/video]

YACOLT, WA (KPTV) - There are sounds you expect to hear in prison - the locking of doors, announcements over the intercom, voices of staff members on walkie-talkies.

If you visit the Silver Star Unit at Larch Corrections Center, you may also hear something unfamiliar – meows, purrs and the jingle of cat toys.

Five felines currently reside at the prison as part of a cat adoption program coordinated with the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society. The inmates socialize the cats and get them ready to be adopted.

This would be a great program for Julian and Ricky when they are in the Provincial clink

Wonderful. If a cat takes to you, you must be doing something right.

Yup. This one lived in our yard for over two years before she decided we were suitable staff.

Ah Bubbles the wise. Vince the Pince lived with him in jail if I recall.

There is a reality show about prisoners who have dogs and take care of them as well. The name and network escapes me at the moment.

“Beautiful tortie girl!”

I understand that torties are girls by nature. I had a beaut awhile back. In the wee hours of the night she would creep up in bed with me, put a paw out and just test to see if I was with it or not. Dragged her out from under a barn when she was a wee one. Great cat.

“Kitties pick their servants carefully.”

Tell me about it while I walk from one end of the house to the other, hunched over, with a kitty on my back.

1999 times out of 2000, yes. The remainder are sterile males.

“1999 times out of 2000, yes. The remainder are sterile males. “

You mean to tell me my cuddly little cat could have been a guy? OMG. That explains the little paw-taps in the middle of the night when no one was looking.

Yes, she is. And that notch in her left ear gives her character. Well, beyond that which she naturally possesses as a tortie. :)

Why is it on every one of these threads, there are always one or two remarks removed in the first ten? Is it because you posted twice by accident or, as usual, are there the kitteh haters that get on a thread that is for kitteh lovers and try to rile folks up.

It always makes me laugh to see an adult scared of a little kitteh.

Pretty cool that they get to raise and socialize the kittehs, probably better for the inmates though.

I”m sure most prisoners would do much better as human beings if this program were in every prison.

That plus gardening and eating what they grow.

The inmates socialize the cats and get them ready to be adopted.

And the cats socialize the inmates...

How right you are. We had an orange cat named Ginger. She decided to move in with us and our Siamese cat...she lived next door with a family who had just acquired a dog, and she was through with them and moved in with us and our male Siamese cat, a handsome devil, by the way.

Goldie was gentle, sweet, a girlie-girl, the kind of cat children would play with and push around in a doll buggy. She was always solicitous of us when we were in ill in bed. We called her the Nurse Cat, because she would jump on the bed to sniff your face to see how you were, she would crawl under the blanket and snuggle close to you, and when you lifted the blanket to look down and check her out, there she was with her sweet face and a meow for you. She always made sure to spend some time sitting on the bed near you, just to be near. And she was so kind and understanding of our crazy, loveable Siamese Cat who found her irresistible (they were both fixed, by the way) and acted the fool for her attention and affection. They would sleep head to toe on a desk chair every night. She was the kind of cat who would sit outside with our Siamese Cat, who wore a collar and leash, to keep him company.. Goldie came to us as a free range kitty, and we never did put a collar/leash on her. She decided one day not to go outside on her own any more, and she officially became an inside cat and two cats were as happy as larks. She would take walks with us and our leashed Siamese Cat and then they would both go in the house to stay. Lovely memories and I miss them all.
