Fed Up with Aggressive Pop-Ups at Townhall, CanadaFreePress, etc.
130224 | Arthur McGowan

Posted on 02/24/2013 10:30:20 AM PST by Arthur McGowan

I am fed up with, and don't even go to, a number of websites that make it impossible to close their pop-ups--I mean there isn't even a button to do so--or else, when you close the pop-up, an entirely new, screen-filling WINDOW opens. Townhall, CanadaFreePress, NRO, NewsMax, and many others are guilty of this kind of aggression. I'm sick of it. I never even look at what they are hawking, and now, I won't click any links on FR to these sites until I hear that they've cleaned up their act.

Microsoft doesn't want you blocking ads.

Or evading their surveillance.

I have AdBlock and it works most of the time.

When a TownHall popup appears, I hit the F-5 key, which simply refreshes the page and the popup doesnt reappear...

F-5 works most of the time...

Firefox is a Browser like Internet Explorer.

Download it here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

Then download and install adblock.

No more ads!

IE is an Internet browzer written and owned by Microsoft. Firefox is an Internet browser written by the Mozilla Foundation and released as open source code. Anybody can download, modify and compile the code. It is free. There is lots of free open source software out there. The quality, security and reliability is every bit as good as proprietary software.

You can download Firefox here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/.

After you download and install it, start it up and got to the "Tools-Addons" menu and search for and install Adblock Plus.

Thanks EPU for posting that link! I had no idea there was such a product. NRO is a site I visit often and it throws all kinds of ads up.

I just installed the Adblock Plus for Chrome and it has cleaned up NRO quite nicely!

Whatever you do, avoid Examiner blogs, they are the worst. A half dozen pop-ups or float overs along with banners on every available inch of real-estate. I’ve started getting alerts of a lot of tracking cookies too.

FWIW, I use AdMuncher. It blocks most banner ads and popups, and if there’s a particular site it doesn’t block for some reason, you can usually add that on.

It’s not free, but it’s great. I’ve had it since it went into business ten years ago, one of the few from back then that I’ve kept.

Very small program, and it actually speeds up access to most sites since you don’t download all those visual ads. I visit lots of sites and hardly ever see an ad anywhere.

Don’t forget Ghostery

Blocks trackers too.

Adblock and ghostery are the minimum for browsing.

See if your browser allows you to shut off Javascript (and Java, to be safe), that will probably take care of it. Also, some browsers have separate settings that can just refuse to let anyone but you open a new window.

I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean.

I got pop up blocker and it is just about as bad as the pop up sites/adds.
Every time one attempts to popup - my popup blocker asks me if I want to block their add.

My question is - why won’t a pop up blocker do exactly what it is supposed to do and leave me out of the discussion?

I don’t want the adds and I don’t feel the need to justify my decision to reject their adds every time.

I have permanently deleted all email coming from NEWSMAX to my SPAM bucket.

As soon as I see an article and NEWSMAX pops up, I do a search on the same subject and look for another source.

I was just at examiner.com in Google Chrome and there was nothing blocking the text. As long as the article is legible,
pop-up and banner ads are like junk mail that I didn’t ask for and don’t want (especially customized) but can be just as easily ignored.

I was on an optometrists site the other day and I clicked on a VSP add. Did some research on them, decided I didn’t want to join. Then every site I went to there was a VSP banner add.

Did some more research and found out about super cookies, now VSP adds are gone.

You might want to consider adding “Ghostery” to your add ons as well. It blocks trackers.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where an adblock variation or another addon isn’t feasible — install this as a startup script in your DDWRT router:

Code:
_rogue=127.0.0.1
echo -e “n=1\nwhile ! wget -q -O /tmp/hsts http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt ; do\n\t[ \$n -gt 5 ] && break\n\tlet n+=1\n\tsleep 60\ndone\ngrep \”^127.0.0.1\” /tmp/hsts | grep \”^127.0.0.1\” | grep -v localhost | awk ‘{print \”$_rogue\\\t\”\$2}’ | tr -d ‘\\\015’ >/tmp/dlhosts\nrm /tmp/hsts\nkillall -HUP dnsmasq” >/tmp/wh
sh /tmp/wh &

Additional DNSMasq Options script:

Code:
addn-hosts=/tmp/dlhosts

I agree that they’re annoying, but if we want a successful and profitable conservative press then the price will be advertising. For Pete’s sake, Limbaugh is all ads, but that’s what keeps him on the air.

You should know right away. There will be a little "ghost" icon when you open your browser and the trackers, if there are any on the site, will show up for a short time in a box and then the box goes away.

A number next to the ghost icon tells you how many trackers there are if you miss the box.

Breitbart does it, too.

Many pop-ups seem malicious. Often my anti-virus software warns me against proceeding. Other times, a fake Microsoft warning comes up claiming my machine is infected, & offering to clean the problem. Exiting these windows usually requires closing Explorer via the task manager. You can't click your way out. That only spawns more windows.

Makes me so damn mad!!!!!!

Warning to Breitbart & other sites with these annoying, potentially dangerous pop-ups: I don't go to your site very often anymore. I can easily get my news & opinions from sites that treat visitors better. You have a lot of competition.

Mozilla FireFox + Noscript addin = CONTROL

Noscipt blocks all scripts from running unless you selectively allow them to run. You can “train” Noscript to allow your favorite sites to function to the degree you want. You will be amazed how much marketing “spyware” clutters practically any web site now.
