There are two kinds of scientists in this world -- those whose discoveries will lead the planet into a new era of enlightenment, and those whose research will inevitably be stolen by terrorists who enjoy dressing up as snakes. This article is dedicated to this second group, those whose groundbreaking findings will someday be appropriated by a cloned Nazi dictator in purple tights and transformed into a super-weapon aimed at a trussed-up Captain America's crotch. Nawt mein faulten!
I like my Battlestars and Starwars, but Science fiction movies that attack a planet with a fleet of ships are ludicrous.
You could destroy a planet with large marbles. We have the technology now to travel over 120,000 mph in current spacecraft. Imagine a small ship carrying thousand large softball sized marbles made of a metal alloy that is not only super dense but heat resistant. Calculate earth’s trajectory and launch at the planet at over 120,000 mph.
Each impact would be greater than a nuclear weapon and a 1,000 could fit in a bus size cargo hold. Double the speed and the planet would ripped apart. Who said Iran needs nuclear weapons? All they need is a space program.
Marbles? We need better name than that. I know! SPACEBALLS!
How did I know, before I even clicked the link, this was Cracked?
There are some cool ideas there. I like the supersonic injector, but the shockwave generator also looks pretty good. Money quote from that one: “This replaces the older method of playing Adele songs until the enemy was subdued with clinical depression.”
Been there, done that! I had this toy as a child.
Or just tow a 200-yard-long nickel-iron asteroid out of its proper orbit and towards a collision with earth.
They left out photon torpedoes. You should see the awesomeness of a Plasma Toroid.
I invented a weapon system once.
Without disclosing any secrets, it was a kind of magic pixie dust that stopped all enemy vehicles over a wide area.
We never used it because it looked too much like chemical warfare despite being harmless to humans.
All of the stuff in the article is out in the open. Some of the stuff I have seen is almost supernatural.
I just hope they have kept the best stuff compartmentalized. The clowns in the exec branch would sell their mothers to our enemies for their next bag of crack.
I saw the vortex generator over 40 years ago when I was a cadet.
The Germans in WWII had one that would rip the wings off a fighter at several hundred yards, but.....it was too heavy to mount on an airplane, it was huge, it used a lot of valuable explosives, range was too short, and, well....a machine gun just WORKED better.
btw home made proof of concept rail gun on youtube.
