OS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise and unprecedented appearance on Sunday's Oscars telecast when she presented the award for Best Picture, the first time a president or first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.

Appearing live on screen from the White House in Washington, almost 3,000 miles from the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Obama praised the work of the movie industry before announcing the Iran hostage drama "Argo" the Best Picture winner.

Wearing a silver evening dress, Obama said this year's nominated films had "made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter."

Watch as the aristocrats laud each others inherent greatness, careful to exclude any who achieve through merit.

Saw this on F&F. Doubly glad I did not watch, and have not watched the Oscars in probably ten years. Can’t stomach it.

I particularly liked her military retinue in the background.

She is about as classy and dignified as a window women in Amsterdam.

Any absolute disgrace that she is a First Lady. The video of her dancing the other day, her and her husbands constant appearances on TV entertainment shows is not only cringe worthy, but an insult to the office and the American people.

How on earth are they getting away with it?

An actress giving an award to other actors. Perfect.

One day you're working a $350k no-show patronage hospital job in Chicago, the next you're on the Oscar stage. #AStarisBorn

Perhaps “unprecedented” but certainly not a “surprise.” I mean, Stalin used to hand out “Hero of the Soviet Union” awards to his pet film makers. Yet another step on our road to voluntarily becoming a dictatorship.

Another historic “first!” Will there be no end to their greatness?

A stomach turning surprise for sure.

But its good to see that some of the normally non-political or even a few liberals commenting on the inappropriateness of Moochelle’s cameo.

She probably wanted to be there but the Red Carpet walkers wouldn’t stand for the security checks.

Wasn’t a surprise to me and my wife. We predicted at least one of them would either show up or have something to do with it.

The phoniness continues.

They are bound and determined to alienate half their potential audience.

Gave up on Hollywood years ago.

Anyone with any sense at all would never watch this glorified presentation to the elite communists of America. Most of Hollywood are real ignorant fools. Watch country awards if you want to see real Americans.

The real surprise was that she did not not announce her husband won for best actor. I mean that teardrop and getting choked up at the school massacre was a pretty fine example. I wonder how he managed to do it. I mean that I hope he really was sad over it, but his fascism-promoting response of gun-grabbing leads me to believe otherwise.

I am usually somewhat interested in the Academy Awards, but this year I could not think of a single movie that stood out in 2012 as worthy of an award except perhaps the movie Courageous which Hollywood would never acknowledge even exists.
