Michelle Obama’s Oscar presentation raises questions about the role of a first lady

Is this what Michelle Obama looks like untethered to the pressure of a campaign? Is she free to follow her whims without worries about political backlash?

The first lady became the buzz of the weekend when she beamed into the Academy Awards from the White House to present the award for best picture with Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson. Attendees and viewers were flabbergasted at the satellite image of the elegantly dressed Obama, flanked by young service members in full regalia, opening the envelope to name Ben Affleck’s “Argo” the winner.

“It just seem[ed] so natural because the whole thing is so unnatural,” Affleck told reporters after the show — right after he said he thought he was “hallucinating.”

In other words: What’s the first lady doing at the Oscars?

Apparently, having fun.

“As a movie lover, she was honored to present the award and celebrate the artists who inspire us all — especially our young people,” Kristina Schake, the first lady’s communications director, said in a statement.

But the notion that Obama made the virtual appearance for the pure pleasure of it created confusion among both fans and detractors. Was she toying with Hollywood stardom for its own sake? And if she were, was that okay? In Washington, stardom can seem frivolous.

“The only thing that was missing was seeing her walk down the red carpet,” said Anita McBride, who served as chief of staff to first lady Laura Bush...

As I wrote on the other thread: All kidding aside, The Beast will run for POTUS and she will win because they will fix the election just like the last one! This country is so screwed!!

I thought FL’s were supposed to advocate for certain causes, for those less fortunate, for issues that are of signficance or that will somehow improve the lives of those in our society.

What does handing out an Oscar award have to do with any of it? Nothing. Our FLOTUS is just enamoured of Hollyweird and wants their approval, in addition to putting her fat narcisistic butt in front of everyone at all times, AND to likely spend more taxpayer $$ on a new dress.

She knows no bounds. She wants to BE like those in Hollywood ...all the glamour, dresses, trips, shoes, diva treatment. She has no interest in simply behaving like a classy and appropriate FLOTUS. It’s beneath her in her own mind.

My big question is where was Zer0? Why didn’t he accompany Michelle during her Oscar presentation?

You know, this sequester business is taking all of the president's time.....we need to pray for his strength in this time of national crisis (/sarc)

Weren't the Oscars politicized enough with the awarding of Best Sound Editing to Zero Dark Thirty? It was like she was giving the imprimatur to the choice of Argo and the vendetta against Zero Dark Thirty.

Best Sound Editing? What about Best Picture Any of Us Ever Saw?

Zero Dark Thirty was not the best movie of the year. Neither was Argo.

Life of Pi was better. And so was Silver Linings Playbook.
Both these movies had great stories with good acting. But of course these movies don’t make a political statement, so no one is discussing them.

Michelle is in campaign mode because she is campaigning.

What with idiot voters and massive voter fraud, you are watching the next president of our Country.

The people, this includes many FReepers, should have believed or cared about the last stolen election. But no one cared because it was only Romney.

They now know we will do nothing about election fraud so full steam ahead for the communists.

Mark my words. Line backer Michelle will run for and be the next president.

I haven’t seen Pi or Silver Linings.

But you can’t deny there was a vendetta. Never mind that if you watch the movie closely, it tells several very important truths. I won’t list them, though I’m dying to, because part of the greatness of the movie is that it shows you these, if you are watching closely and with an open mind and a desire to see the truth.

It shows respect for Muslims, by the way, which no one has either noticed or seen fit to mention. Too busy with the sensational aspects of torture and taking an easy slap at what they see as the right wing.

Dying to say more but won’t ruin it for anyone.

"I did a little poking around and found the cost of Michelle Obama’s Oscar dress. It was designed by Naeem Khan and has an estimated price tag of $8,990."

It looks like another creation of Reynolds.

Michelle’s dress was the reason I experienced temporary blindness when she appeared. I remember crying out, “My eyes!” as she suddenly appeared. Even my dog jumped off my lap and hid under the ottoman. Good night! That bright dress explains it.

Thank God Michelle didn’t try to make a Red Carpet appearance. That would have been something. She would have been the Red Carpet.

Hmmm... Sarah Palin got a closet full of clothes for about that cost for use in her VP campaign and was pilloried in the press.

Nope, No bias at all.

AN EVITA WANNABE--POWER'S GONE TO HER KOOKY BANGED-UP HEAD

--- tweeted Walter Kirn, who writes for the liberal journal The New Republic----seeing Obama lavishly gowned, replete with jewels, and, of all things, military guards, was a 'Creepy South American totalitarian-lite vibe....'"

NY Post opined: "Even President Ronald Reagan never busted in live on the Oscars, and Reagan was an actual movie star, academy member, and former president of the Screen Actors Guild. (Reagan taped a non-self-aggrandizing “enjoy the show” welcome for the March 30, 1981, Oscars — which had to be delayed because he was shot that very day.)" (EXCERPT--NYP Oscar Review 2/26)
