An Australian Billionaire Is Building A Nearly Exact Replica Of The Titanic
Business Insider ^ | 02/27/2013 | Alex Davies

Last year, rumors popped up that Australian billionaire Clive Palmer was working on cloning a dinosaur.

Whatever happens to those plans, it's clear that Palmer has a taste for recreating the past.

The 58-year-old, who made his fortune from natural resources like coal and iron, is now bringing the world's most famous ship back to life.

In New York on Tuesday, he unveiled images of Titanic II, a replica of the ocean liner that sunk on its maiden voyage in 1912, claiming 1,502 lives.

To offer 21st century cruise-goers the chance to sail on the Titanic, Palmer created the company Blue Star Line last year. The ship is being designed by Finnish company Deltamarin, and will be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, Reuters reported.

While the new Titanic will have air conditioning and modern safety equipment (and enough lifeboats for all its 2,435 passengers and 900 crew), it will be made to look just like the original. Passengers will even be divided into three classes, and will be kept from mingling with those outside their station.

Construction should begin next year, and Palmer hopes to have the ship cruising by 2016. He has not specified how much the project will cost, but says the funds are coming from his own pocket, and that he'll spend what it takes to get the Titanic back on the ocean.

I saw him on the news this morning. He’s got a great attitude. He said “I’m rich and I want to spend my money before I die”.

His “wasteful” spending will employ a lot of people.

Why is a Finnish firm designing the “Titanic?” Wasn’t it designed once, already?

On paper only, if the drawings are still around.

Nothing in a format that can get fed into a computer...:^)

The modern enclosed lifeboats in open wells along the sides of the hull are a tad bit different than the clinker hull lifeboats carried on the original ship. Those are of course represented by props up on level of the original boat deck, which are too far above the waterline to meet current regulations.

I'd rather pay a Chinese worker than a U.S. welfare queen.

If they’ve got an old photograph, why don’t they just feed it into a 3D printer? They will have a new Titanic in no time (as long as they don’t run out of ink). And, since the photos back then were just Black & White, they’ll only have to paint the ship to be ready! :)

Actually I’m kind of interesting to see how liberals react to this. The nazis made a propaganda film about the Titanic with the evil bankers being the cause of the sinking.

Who in the world would pay to be abused like that?

People do it millions of times a day on airlines; if you deem that abuse; and in hotels.

Apparently just about everyone reading this would pay for a place on the floor in steerage.

To each his own.

Being charitable is never a bad thing. St. Jude’s Hospital is a fine example of the goodness of man.

Actually, they can.
Not directly, but the process has been available for decades, and it can be accomplished in one tenth the time and manpower as the originals and, simultaneously produce modern manufacturing computer input for fabrication.

I would hope the "near identical" refers only to visible appearance, inside and out; it does NOT mean inferior metals, inferior propulsion and lack of modern stability controls.
A double hull, ultra-strong modern steels, better compartmentalization and safety systems are presumed to be incorporated, as well as all modern navigation equipment.

On a thread about a new Titanic?
Most of us did not make the leap of assuming that the proponent is NOT extremely charitable.

Why not go all the out and include the inane "...beyond a certain point you have made enough money..."
