Word For The Day, Thursday, February 28, 2013 – paraph

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

paraph \PAR-uhf\, noun
a flourish made after a signature, as in a document, originally as a precaution against forgery.

Example sentences:
The manuscript's most tantalizing feature is a scribal paraph with the initials IB at the end of Certain sonnets...
-- H. R. Woudhuysen, Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscriptsa

His worried expression, however, was not just a mask for the moment. Of late, it had become his most distinctive feature, his peculiar paraph.
-- Ken Anderson, The Statue Of Pan

The paraph is only a schematic and marginal countersignature, a fragment of signature; indeed, who can claim to decipher a whole signature?
-- Jacques Derrida, Mémoires

Etymology:
Though early incarnations of paraph appear in Italian, Middle French, and Middle English, its earliest origins are Greek with para-meaning "beside" and the final -ph resulting from graphos, referring to text.root alloquī address."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

The paraph of many obama speeches is the haughty, Mussolini-like chin-in-the-air.

Too early for a paraph, but “Good Morning” anyhow. We had 14” of snow in the last 2 days. Haven’t looked outside yet. It took us nearly a half hour to drive about 10 miles last night because the glare ice had several cars off the road, including police cars. Once someone stopped because of the traffic impediments, some of them could not get re-started. I truly thought the guy ahead of us was going to slide sideways into our car.

The police did not seem to be helping anyone except themselves. I have NEVER (in 30 years) seen the roads around here like this. Usually there is enough salt down to avoid situations like this.

I was so tired by the time I got home that I missed the ending of White Collar AGAIN!

I thought the Paraphim were right between the Seraphim and the Dominions.

I'm not sure I like Callie from CSI Miami on there. I think she's on Pratt's payroll. No other spoilers from me.

I think it’s the sound a skater makes. My team was whipped and hung out to dry in Anaheim last night.

Hard to do my usual paraph on my signature when signing electronically. Not quite the same as pen to paper.

Going to be out and about all morning.....one of the kiddies is sick today and I have a FREE day the day after our tax returns hit our account. Whoooppppiiiiieee.......

Is Callie the new boss? If so, I’m certain she’s on Pratt’s payroll.

I loved Mozzie’s ice cream venture. nd Neal! He’s so talented that he could make a fortune legally with his art works. But, I guess, that is too much like work. LOL.

I’m going to watch the whole thing Sat. morning when I can stay awake.

God bless John Hancock.

True courage.

He, and everyone else who signed that day, signed their death warrant.

Good thing we won.

She is. I thought the audio was off for the outdoor scenes. Neal’s voice was a different pitch. No one else in the family heard it and they’re musicians!
