Also, known pop/rock songs can have a huge impact if properly placed. However, I've seen movies where such songs distracted me.

Scorsese is one of my favorite directors but he can go way overboard with pop/rock hits. "Casino" is a perfect example. It seemed like every single cut had a different era-appropriate song playing. There must've been a hundred different songs at the end credits. The soundtrack itself was two CDs long. And it was distracting. His previous film, "Goodfellas" was a little better paced and the pop/rock soundtrack worked well.
