Southwest Research Institute Solves Hindenburg Mystery 75 Years Later

“Something will happen to the back of the Hindenburg,” said a letter to the German Embassy in May 1937, just before the huge dirigible burst into flames above the Lakehurst, New Jersey. The letter was eerily correct, but lacked specifics.

Was it a bomb? A hydrogen leak? A thunderstorm? A spark? Saint Elmo’s Fire?

Scientists and engineers from San Antonio’s very own Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) helped design, test and build Hindenburg 1/10 scale replicas to test each theory 75 years after the fact. A team of local engineers, scientists and historians teamed up with the Discovery Channel’s series “Curiosity” to get to the bottom of the crash that claimed the lives of 36 of the 97 passengers and crew aboard the Hindenburg airship.

And then the article at the link doesn’t even bother to give you the reason the Hindenberg exploded. It just tells you to go see “Curiousity” on the Discovery Channel.

Nothing but a “tease” advertisement for the Discovery Channel.

I'll never forget when Superman flew under that airship and caught Dabbs Greer falling from a rope he was hanging onto. Oh wait, that was different accident.

We watched that program. When Hindenburg was coming in, the Captain jinked the ship hard, just prior to landing. A worker inside heard what he thought was a wire snapping, and it might have punctured one of the bags of hydrogen. When the hydrogen leaked, it mixed with oxygen in one of the interior spaces, and went up and out a ventilation port just forward of the tail.

A father and son standing up on a hill above the site saw St. Elmo's Fire at the back of the ship, then a spark must have hit the hydrogen/oxygen mix coming out of the vent. The spark created a flame that, because the ship was tilted with its nose up, moved forward, along the spine, burning the ship along the way.

GGG managers are SunkenCiv, StayAt HomeMother & Ernest_at_the_Beach
Thanks Daffynition. Leonardo and Kate could have been in a Hindenburg movie, but it wouldn't have lasted three hours, that's for sure. "I'm king of the, aieiiiiiiiiiieeeee!!!"

Just adding to the catalog, not sending a general distribution.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.
