Revealed: The banker who shaped the modern financial world after WWII was a Soviet spy who wanted America to become communist
Harry Dexter White was the architect of the post-war financial system, which paved the way for the West to dominate the 20th century and win the Cold War.
But it has now emerged that the brilliant economist was in fact a staunch anti-capitalist who privately praised the Soviet Union's communism.
Documents unearthed at Princeton University prove that, although White devoted his life to strengthening western capitalism, he secretly despised the system he had created and believed it would eventually be overtaken by the state-controlled economy of the USSR and its allies.
The flawed genius did not live long enough to find out just how wrong he was, as he died in 1948, before both the decades-long boom enjoyed by the U.S. and Europe and the slow decline of the East.

There was a terrific novel with a story like this: The Ropespinner Conspiracy by Michael Thomas. His main characters Manning Mallory (think Jamie Dimon) and Waldo Chamberlain (think White) conspire to produce a financial and banking system that eventually implodes. The idea is for them to defect to Moscow and announce what they did as the final act to blowing up the West. The title is based on the famous communist quote about selling us the rope to hang ourselves:

Just finished “operation Snow” Kostner 2012.. Latest info re White and MANY other communists in influential positions during WWII by a “liberal” leaning author. Lots of history we never knew. Ex Tojo, not really a “Bad” guy
US Military officials believed it ended any possibility of the German Army defying Hitler and offering a separate peace on the Western front which was Stalin's biggest fear.
If the Morgenthau Plan had been actually carried out, it would have resulted in a greater holocause than what Hitler accomplished.
This is news? We already knew from the famous “Venona Cables” that Harry Dexter White was a communist and had been spying for the Soviet Union.
Why are papers “unearthed at Princeton University” more believable than Soviet cables decrypted by the end of WWII and declassified — by Democratic senator of NY, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, of all people — in 1995?

Excellent detail on why McCarthy was RIGHT.
McCarthy was correct, but he was not 'right.' He was a bull in the china shop and by going after anyone in his path discredited any further investigations.
People like Hiss and White had been exposed long before McCarthy began his publicity offensive. McCarthy came in at the tail end of that and saw a cause that could make him a national name.
Read some of the stuff from Whitaker Chambers or Bill Buckley back in the day to understand how McCarthy's show boating allowed the really Big Fish to swim free.
McCarthy did far more harm to the cause than he did good. And he did it for selfish reasons, not out of patriot beliefs.
He had several different code names over the years. You can look them up here.
The most interesting thing is that after all was done, neither the Soviets or the Americans could figure out why he did what he did.
